A prey

No fur

“Do you want to see some dance theater?” I asked my godson.
Hesitantly he answered: “Yes.”

A classical romantic ballet was not available on the night that was chosen for his first dance experience, so I opted for a slightly less romantic ballet.
He loved “Glass Pieces” (music: Philip Glass; choreography: Jerome Robbins) but during “Other Dances” (music: Frédéric Chopin; choreography: Jerome Robbins) he started munching on M&M’s and finally he fell asleep. At least one of our neighbors could not appreciate his munching.
In the taxi on the way home he declared that he loved “Glass Pieces”, but he was also enchanted with “The Cage” (music: Igor Stravinsky; choreography: Jerome Robbins.) According to the program “The Cage” was about “the phenomenon of the female of the species considering the male as a prey.”

I was intrigued by a sign at the coat check at the David H. Koch theater saying: “No fur."
Fortunately I wasn’t wearing my fur coat last night.

Jelinek was voted Playwritght of the year
'No fur' - 'No M&M's'
Arnon,
Has the sign 'no fur' to do with insurance?
Or does fur take too much place?

And what about M&M's? They are not forbidden?
Vera
Maybe it's a political statement?
Philip Glass, Stravinsky? Excellent choice for an introduction.

In which country?
I would love to read Jelinek’s novels (I bought two of her) but I cannot digest her style, a pity. Although she can write understandable in her essays on her site.
I agree with Bernard. What's the problem with her writing style? I can't read more that six pages.
@David Manos Pefko
Indeed, after ten pages I was completely lost, as if someone had messed up the words. I wondered if this was poetry or maybe a secret code.
And yes, I liked the movie The Piano Teacher

I also liked the movie.
I don't see it like poetry, the same thing happend when I started to read 'Lust' that starts with this:
"Gordijnsluiters welven zich tussen de vrouw in haar huis en de overigen, die ook eigen woningen en eigen aardigheden bezitten. De armen, ook zij hebben hun domicilies, waarin hun vriendelijke gezichten bijeen zijn gevoegd, slechts het immer gelijke scheidt hen."

When I read something like that I close the book imediatly.
Arnon
When are you going to Twitter?
Bernard
Jellinek's "The Piano Teacher" is very readable.

Thanks!
peculiar
I've always admired Jelinek's work for leaving a 'Gesamteindruck' through the whole of her work that is so vast that it can't be captured through random quoting.
Pjötr and others
I agree, Jelinek's novels are sometimes (too) close to poetry and from time to time impenetrable, but she deserves to be taken seriously, she deserves a second look.
@Arnon – Pjötr
Thanks for the information (I own Lust and The Children of the Dead, and I found them quite unreadable). But I do take her seriously and I do appreciate the content of her work, if only …
To Bernard
I would like to encourage you to read into the controversy that 'Lust' provoked when it was published.
That is indeed taking a detour, but it just might shed an illuminating light as well on her writing as on your reading.
@Pjötr
I remember the controversy, mostly about the content. It was the content that attracted me to her work. But her style is a bit too difficult to read for me. That is why I said that I prefer to read her essays, there the style is quite different. For me, there is nothing wrong with the content of her novels, though.
But maybe I give it another try now to read some of her novels.
To Bernard
There was as well some controversy that transcended the superficial content, and discussed the statue of pornography.

My 'Abitur' dealt (among others) with the latter.
@Pjötr
Interesting. (And first time I hear about ‘Abitur’, although I finished Latin & Greek gymnasium). Where can I find it, if in Dutch or in English - my German is poor -?
To Bernard
I wrote it in Dutch. Under strict conditions I could send it to you through e-mail.
@Pjötr
I shall agree with and keep any condition from your side. Thanks.
To Bernard
Due to practical circumstances it will take some time. But in the mean while my promise will haunt me. Rest assured.
@Pjötr
No problem! I am looking forward to it.
