Immigration

Exploitation

I’m a fan of the Dardenne brothers. Their latest movie is “Lorna’s silence”. I saw “Lorna’s silence” one day after having seen “Import Export”.
Both movies deal with the problems that arise when women from Eastern Europe (Ukraine in “Import Export”; Albania in “Lorna’s silence”) immigrate (illegally) to Western Europe.
“Import Export" is a more interesting movie than “Lorna’s silence” but I don’t know of any other moviemaker that so relentlessly focuses on the subproletariat as the Dardenne brothers do.
A friend asked me: “Why is it called 'Lorna’s silence'?" I’m not sure about that. “Lorna’s Pregnancy” would have been a more accurate title, but a title of course doesn’t need to be accurate.
Both movies make clear that closing the borders is an open invitation for human trafficking and other sorts of exploitation.

now, about Larna :) you're following my movie history, Strange things are happenin around us :)

As for Dardenne brothers, i think they are only valuable directors, which pay attention to immigration probleme, but accurately, with sensitive approach. i mean...
I am from Georgia, and iillegal mmigration in EU is not a strange fruit for me :)
Also, Dardenne's "Child" - about migrant couple. great movie..
Personally, I'm a little tired of the obsession with social realism in European cinema. Although I do appreciate the craftmanship of the Dardenne brothers. If you study their screenplays/films, you'll see that despite it initially not necessarily looking that way, they almost mathematically adhere to an Aristotelean regime of storytelling. It would be interesting to use their films as material for (proze) writing classes.
silence
Completely different but overwhelming too is 'Disgrace' with John Malkovich. To escape from the table-madness I went to see it yesterday.
The title 'Lorna's silence' tells more than 'Lorna's pregnancy'.
It is: concrete + abstract versus concrete. I think.
Vera M and Arnon
Any progress with the people without table-manners? They are absurd, but just let them get you a new table and don't do business with them again as they sound morally bankrupt too. And where do we buy tickets to your Woman Without Table museum?

Arnon, perhaps a bit late but I was wondering if your Romanian massage chapters and visits to prostitutes where possibly a quest or yearning for intimacy, (that is the background of my question.)
Tabatha
Do you think there is anyone here, who is unaware that you are Noa/Aliefka?

What's the point in hiding, if you don't hide well?

Are you telling me that the background of your question is vulgar psychology?
Arnon
If you find intimacy or curiosity vulgar, then yes it is. I could picture great intimacy with the Romanian Master, you sitting on his lap while he kneads you and gives fatherly advice in a language you don't understand, perhaps the occasional grunt included. One could see it as vulgar or soothing, it's up to you.

You should read carefully. I mentioned vulgar psychology. You seem to believe that I crave intimacy and that this longing is the reason I started working as a masseur in Romania.
You will forvige me, but I call this belief vulgar psychology.

Also ms batta - I am well accustomed to jealousy, except most people hide it better than you do.

Practise what you preach Mister Grunberg, I didn't say I believe you went to be a masseur because you crave intimacy, it was a question.
