Philosophical problem
Blue
This afternoon I went to a manicurist for a manicure and a pedicure.
“You want nails blue?” the manicurist asked, while she was rubbing my left foot.
“No, thanks,” I said.
“You sure?” the manicurist asked. “This morning man comes in. Says I want blue nails. Is Halloween. No blue nails? Green nails for you? Red? Yellow?”
“Very kind,” I answered. “But no thanks.”
The manicurist fell silent, but then she asked: “Are you married?”
“No,” I said.
“Ah, that’s why no blue nails.”
This evening I had dinner with a friend. There were lots of half naked women on the street and some half naked men as well.
Nudity, like beauty, is a philosophical problem.

Philosophy
The philosophy of beauty / nudity / (fashion) / (the human body) etc, isn't really a problem: all philosophy is science fiction, and these 'problems' are no problems at all: belonging to the 'metaphysical' realm of philosophy.
The philosophy of beauty/nudity inevitably consists of sophisms & fallacies.
We are apparently prone to creating 'problems' when there are none.
After all, what's your (philosophical) problem with these half naked men and women?
No sight for sore eyes?
Philosophy
@Bert: you have been reading some Wittgenstein, haven't you?
@Mr. Grunberg: I have the feeling the philosopher in you is starting to come out of the closet.. In your younger days, you seemed merely dismissive about philosophy, now philosophical problems seem to pop up more and more in your writing. Is this part of a bigger project you're working on?
It's only a small step from nudity as a philosophical problem to morality.
"Schaam je kleedje aan."
morality
There's no real difference between nudity & morality....
And I do sincerely hope Arnon Grunberg isn't embarking on some fatuous philosophical project !
[Going back some centuries?!]
Please don't!

In Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David is wearing a big strawhat to a beachparty. His manager, Jeff, is the only one who dares to comment on it. It is indeed buttugly.
Larry David thereby says "I don't have to care about what I'm wearing; I'm married!"
I believe blue nails are the strawhat in this little anekdote. There's a point in one's life where caring is no longer a primary problem. In a marriage with itself, man can strawl around naked without caring one bit.
Philosophy
Wittgenstein's 'Blue And Brown Books'?
Great.... Have your fingernails painted blue and brown....
Dens
I guess you were drunk?
Dens
PS
In a marriage with itself,...
??? What does that mean?
Dens
I guess you ARE drunk....
bert hesper
Please hold your insulting comments to yourself.
Dens
I'm truly sorry.
In future all insulting comments will only apply to me.
Me, myself and I.
Suggesting you're drunk is an insult?
You're oversensitive!
I'm drunk all the time....
What's going on here? bert hesper is commenting very often and seems to insult someone else, while bert hesper probably doesn't mean any harm...
Once again this puts me in the role of the house-psychologist of this blog. (Like a few months ago when a lady was commenting very often).
By the way: the interest of mr. Grunberg in philosophy was already visible in his "In Praise of Mankind" (and perhaps in The Machiavellist).
Jan Allemagne
Of course I mean no harm to anyone...
You feel you have to be our 'house-psychologist' ?!
You do know that psychology is a load of crap, don't you?
[E.g.
http://chronicle.com/article/An-Intellectual-Movement-for/47500] (Think positive! - a bit of a crypto-fascist movement)
'In Praise of Mankind' certainly is a wonderful piece of philosophical writing, but I hope Mr Arnon Grunberg isn't going to embark on some ethical, - on beauty and nudity - kind of project.
In the end it's all to do with language.
And I guess it's the weather....
So not that much is going on here....
bert
Yes I do, but only sometimes. Especially when the rain is pouring down.
Psychology indeed is all too often about crap or platitudes.
bert
Please send my regards to uncle Ludwig.
Nudity a philosphical problem
I think nudity is a question of clothes.
Vera
...or the lack thereof?
@bert
"I hope Mr Arnon Grunberg isn't going to embark on some ethical, - on beauty and nudity - kind of project."
Why not?
Optimism and pessimism
Were the people half naked or half dressed?
I suppose nudity is mostly optimistic, except when caused by lack of clothes.

Stop drinking! I don't need a name-dropper who is always drunk. I want my employees to be sober and neatly dressed. Are you a smoker? Quit smoking! Psychology is crap? Compared to smoking it's a miracle of profundity.
I need a name-dropper on November 17. Send your résumé with a picture to Johannes. (

Some people are conversation killers. All I ask of you is written proof that you are not one of those conversation killers.
Do you have a daughter?
(Conversation killer)
@M. Hordijk
Yes, I have been reading some Wittgenstein.
... the philosopher coming out...?
Have you ever read 'In Praise of Mankind'?
(Or Mr Grunberg's novels for that matter.)
@Oscar Wilde
Yes, I will send him your regards, if ever I obtain his address in the hereafter.
@h an
Because any ethical/philosophical project, especially on beauty and nudity, is bound to be an endless endeavour and will most likely not be very original.
@Arnon Grunberg
I'm sorry, but I am a chain smoker as well as a drinker.
Of course smoking is a filthy habit, but my cigarette smoke might be less harmful than what (most) psychologists think is some deep insight into what people are or should be.
I don't think I am a conversation killer.
I usually listen a lot, not being a conversationalist.
My comments on this blog constitute the greater part of what I say each day...
Which is what you might expect if someone lives on his own...
You ask for some written proof?
What do you mean? My future writings on this blog?
Or some written testimony from the people I meet now and then?
Sorry, no daughter (or any other offspring).
I do have some nieces, though.

Victor Crebolder! It took me a while to scroll through old blogs and find his name, but there it was. Also made me wonder where Ron Lander is these days. And Bernardus. And Rutger.
aliefka
To whom are you responding?!
@Jan Allemagne goodness, I jumped a little to see a reaction to me as I felt quietly comfortable in the thought of having been blocked. To noone in particular. Just reminiscing the old days.
aliefka
Ok. I was curious.
