Brother

Suffering

Last night I had dinner with Radovan Karadžić’s brother.
The brother turned out to be a soft-spoken man who talked relentlessly about his suffering and the suffering of his family.

I guess REM were right after all - everybody hurts.
Disguise
Is the man at the photo Karadzic's brother, and did he lend Radovan's disguise? Also in the way he talks, blaming everybody but themselves, and this behaviour has no limits in land or race, its a worldwide problem. Can you do something about it Arnon?
Nationalists thrive on selfpity. That's how they unite their group.
Survival
I guess it's a survival strategy for this man. He would either have to deny the family ties with his brother (and maybe with the whole family if they support Radovan) or find a justification for his deeds.
It is a survival strategy from the man in the sense that if he wouldn't be hammering on the suffering , he would be considered a traitor by his supporters. That's the message they want to spread: The Serves suffered a lot.
Arnon
Did you have this meeting with moral qualms or not?
Serves = Serbs
M I
I didn't.
Mieke
The Serbs suffered a lot. Everybody did.

Selfexamination, showing remorse in the acknowledgement that mistakes have been made ,aren't exactly the strongest characteristics of nationalistic environments. Flemish nationalists for example still keep hammering on their suffering during and after WWII, cultivating it , diminishing the suffering of others, F.E. the Jews, at the same time.
Mieke
This all doesn't mean Serbs didn't suffer. Croatian nationalists do exactly the same. All nationalists do. This doesn't say anything about the gross of the population. They just suffer...
Sasja
Exactly , all people suffer in situations of war. I just wanted to point out to Arnon and the readers of this blog, that the suffering is used as a kind of mechanism in the nationalistic reasoning. Karadzic and his brother are nationalists after all. Relentlessly talking about their own suffering proofs this.
brother
What else could he ever talk about?
Mieke
'Proofs' = proves

Yes, well..., the proof is in the pudding...
'... nationalists after all...'
Sure, who isn't, 'after all' ?
Arnon
Did you feel compassion for him then?
M I
No
Being wronged
There's nothing like persecution to foster nationalism. This doesn't mean that the persecution needs necessarily to be real. It is not hard to convince people they are persecuted.

When the formerly persecuted persecute others it is mostly done in the name of "self-defence".
Oh boy, have I suffered! And I'm prepared to suffer even more. That's who I am, the Christian, but you can call me Dens.
Dens
What is God punishing you for?
Dens
Did you shoot yourself again?
