Disappointments
The lusts
I mostly liked Almodóvar’s movies, but I never loved them.
Anthony Lane is critical about Almodóvar’s latest movie “Broken Embraces”: "The clarity and sheen of the film are typically startling, and no living director is more expert in the weaving of matching details; this time, however, the lusts and disappointments of the characters come close to being smothered—and rendered strangely unmoving—by the surfeit of cleverness and cool.”
I came close to loving “Broken Embraces”. It’s pure melodrama, and it doesn’t claim to be anything else than just that. But it’s refreshing to see that beauty is for Almodóvar more important than morality, which is in contemporary cinema often nothing but a bundle of so-called family values.

What keeps you from loving his movies? I haven't seen Broken Embraces yet, but I thought Volver for example was a little too self-referential in parts.

I don't know what keeps me from loving his movies exactly. I remember finding them sometimes a bit mawkish.

I agree that Almodovar's use of emotions or sentiment can feel calculated but I think he is aware of that. I have somewhat ambivalent feelings about his (latest) movies but essentially like them very much.

Yes, there's the problem: a 'bundle of so-called family values'.
Aldomovar films are indeed worth watching, but the 'ultimate morality' in them is a bit 'gooey'.

Si. I am fond of Julio Medem. Everyone saw Lucia y el sexo, some watched Los amantes del circulo polar, but i recommend Tierra.
