Phenomenon

Subculture

I went to Chicago to do research for my new novel and I had a lovely dinner at the Arts Club of Chicago.
My dinner companion told me about a phenomenon I had never heard of before: the tail gate party.

“This is a very interesting subculture,” I said.

“This is not subculture, this is culture, American culture,” she answered.

Melancholy set in: soon I will turn 39 without ever having attended a tailgate party.

The tragedy is that i turn 40 on saturday, know about the phenomenon for years, have a weber but not own a tailgate. But i'm gonna change the situation after this 40 year landmark, although its better to set your goals before that age, which was impossible for me to do because my main goal is to do nothing specific before turning 40. Anyone have suggestions for my agenda on sunday?

Why change your main goal of doing nothing specific after turning 40?

You might want to start writing your memoirs,
or invent a bike with a tail gate...
or...

Why not organise a tailgate party yourself? You still have some time to do it.
Combine it with a yard sale and you're just about ready to pledge allegiance to the flag. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garage_sale
I like it. House and garden stay clean. Nice.
Let's have a winter tail gate party!

Tailgate party culture is vividly described by Tom Wolfe in "I am Charlotte Simmons".
