Ritual

Meaning

This afternoon I had lunch with a good friend in Brooklyn.
We sat down in a garden and we talked about the meaning of religious rituals.
“What’s the meaning of celebrating religious holidays when you are not a believer?” my friend asked.
I didn’t have an answer.
Perhaps meaning is overestimated.
Every human being is entitled to meaningless rituals and meaningless sex, if not every day, at least once a month.

Footnote
Indeed, rituals are also a supermarket.
I remember a mother moaning to her son, ”What is the meaning of all this? Why do we live?”
In an attempt to be helpful the toddler answered, ”Because living is fun ?…”
Of course the boy was just a toddler then.
I try to know the meanings of each festivity and think of it at least one time on that day.
Of course I'm in favour of meaningless rituals and sex.
Yesterday I reread Franny and Zooey (J.D. Salinger) where the jesus-prayer plays an important role. Between Franny and Zooey I pauzed to go deeper into this matter. Interesting.
omg, two nearly nihilists at one hedonistic table
Meaning
Perhaps the meaning of "having the day off, eating together or giving presents" on religious holidays (celebrating something you don't believe seems a bit daft) is simply the freedom at the cause of other peoples believe.
Religion not only provides terror, it also provides free days, joy and simple get-togethers.
Its better to have some mystic party than an employees day off.
