Better

This morning I saw my dentist who happens to be my mother’s dentist as well.
“How is your mother?” he asked.
“She is doing better,” I answered.
He cleaned my teeth. It took him fifteen minutes.
I thanked him for his kindness.
“Don’t forget your newspaper,” he said.

Yes, the newspaper with all the good news from Belgium: the government, the bishop, … (no air crash needed to bring them all down)
one knows he is famous when he can afford to write posts like this
There's something odd about thanking someone you pay to do stuff for you.

No. Why?

That's called being polite.

When I was a student, I worked as a secretary and I cleaned up the office of a high-placed - American - director. When he thanked me I said: "That's okay, I have been payed." I must say he was rather suprised.
I think a "thank you" to a paid person is a masked "sorry". "Sorry I made you do this."
