I am in love
Unworthy
This article by Sam Dagher in yesterday’s Times is a reminder that Kurdish Iraq may be safe for its citizens and tourists, but only as long as you abstain from criticizing the ruling families:
‘A Kurdish journalist was kidnapped here in the capital of the semiautonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq, tortured and then found dead with two bullets in the head on a highway, his family and members of the security forces said on Thursday.
The family and friends of the journalist, Zardasht Osman, 23, said he was killed because of his scathing articles about the region’s two governing parties and its leaders, including the dominant Barzani family. Mr. Osman was a university student who freelanced for a number of publications and often wrote on the Internet under a pseudonym.
“I am in love with Barzani’s daughter,” read a satirical and irreverent Web post by Mr. Osman in December, which appeared to violate a taboo in the region’s deeply conservative and clan-based culture by referring to a female family member of the region’s president, Massoud Barzani. Mr. Osman mused about how he could rise from his poor surroundings by marrying one of Mr. Barzani’s daughters.’
Those who are saying that the northern part of Iraq has become a police state are right I’m afraid.
Despite this article in the Times Zardasht Osman will probably turn out to be an unworthy victim.

That's a very sad story... Thanks for the link to the worthy/unworthy victims article.
First of all the value of a life depend on how free the (local) press is.
With propaganda you can make every human's life worthy. Is there already a tabloid for each region in Iraq (and Afghanistan) to fight with the Americans a war for the minds? Isnt this something for a Van Thillo type of guy?
But then the papers and the public all over the world care less about people in trouble. Opinion is that they must have seen it coming. Even if you can discuss if there is any trouble at all ( from a wrting in Kurdish Iraq to someone having an abortion in Oklahoma) and if the victim can do anything about it . These victims have fewer stars to shine it seems. Until a writer steps in, thank you for the post Arnon.
worthy
Is our (most humans) definition of victims not limited to a certain radius ,the further the toughts have to go,the more unworthy victims become, its like we don't have the energy to think further.Whenever we have to jump over a fence or swim an ocean, its to hard, close to our territory is worthy, the rest is to hard to think fair about.Does that make sence ? Plenty of unworthy victims, aren't there ?
Even Ancient Rome allowed satire. How deep new states can sink nowadays?
my first death bell rang
My first death bell rings
By Sardsht Osman
Translated by Yadgar Merawdaly
In the recent days , for the firs time I was told that my life is going to be end, and as they said, my breath permission would not be available any longer, but I am neither afraid of death or torture, I am waiting the time of my death appointment to see murderers, and I am praying to give me a tragedy death as my worthy tragedy life. Why I am saying that to let my prospective murderers know how the young people of my country are brave and death is their simplest choice, and want make my murderers understand what scares us is lasting these days for the next generation not my death, and my job is to make my little brothers comfortable not myself. I simply say that my only concern for these threats is that there are lots of things worthy talking about and not leave them in that way. The misfortune of this power is that don’t care of its death generation. Yesterday I informed the dean of my college that last night I was threatened to death but he said that this is the problem of police. I don’t know! Is there any country on this earth that the student of its university threatened to death and the university chooses silence with no embarrassment. The dean should have seen my case as his or university’s because I am now a part of this Uni, but I never got shock because I have known for ages that these universities are not our comfortable homes. Then after I contacted the brigadier of Hawler police and “he said that the mobile you are threatened by is outside of this country and said that Erbil is quite nothing happens or you may have a personal problem and my be repeated many times” and I with smile thought that his speech may be right and Nikola Sarkozy may have phoned me and threatened me! So then I will be sure when my coworker recently because his writings kicked and obliged to leave this city. As myself I never leave this city (Erbil) and waiting for the appointment of my death, and know this is the first death bell which lastly becomes a whole bell for the all the young people of my country. So this time I neither register complains nor I will inform relevant officials, I have taken a step and its suffer taking by myself. What I hereby write thing that will be the last word of my life, so I am trying to be as honest as Jesus in my speech and I am pleased that I have word to say and some people don’t want to listen. Whine we are whispering they get furious. Till we are alive we should speak, when our life ends, my coworkers should put a full stop and they get started once again!
