First sentence

Shopping

This afternoon I drank tea with Matt Gallagher, a captain in the US army.
Here is the first sentence of the first chapter of his book “Kaboom” about his experiences in Iraq, where we met each other in June 2008: “I slept through 9/11.” In the same paragraph he reminds the reader that shortly after 9/11 the president of the US asked the American citizens to keep shopping.
You can easily make fun of this advice, but I do believe that it is a sound idea in almost all circumstances: keep shopping.

... and avoid thinking?
I am afraid the former president did not mean ‘shopping for more books like Kaboom…’
What a beautiful first sentence.
It's almost like a musical piece.
keep on breathing
I told my wife when she was in labour: keep on breathing.
Keep shopping, aka: keep the economy going. A sound advice, indeed.
The free world in a nutshell, buy on duty.
I'd find it rather refreshing when a dutch prime minister would give out a simple advice like that.
Ofcourse it shows the downside of our 'free' world, but at least the president was honest about it.

I still remember 9/11 very well. I was shopping at that time, in the persuit of a keyboard for my niece, when the twintowers were falling down. A memory to cherish .

Ironical, but I still remember the feeling of alienation -people were dying by the thousands while I was spending money- very well. My second reaction was :" My God, this means war!"
