When I was around twenty and I had seen Polanski's movie Bitter Moon and I wanted to be a femme fatale I picked up the pick-up line 'Amuse me' from the movie. At that moment I thought it was a very good pick-up line. I must say I was quite bored and lost in these times.

Ive heard a lot of pickuplines in my life and this one is the oldest and the one ive heard most. I always reply that whatever-her-name-is will be screaming mine while i moan. This Phoebe character would not go for that response, only pick up the most humble of men, which explains her frigidity out of boredom. Or is this a contorted joke?

Most characters in Mr. Heatley’s book are despite all their flaws endearing.

Phoebe's line is more subtle.

phoebe is probably more subltle than I am, but than again, I'm probably less frigid.

I know it as a pickup line for men. Are men likely to scream the name of a woman during sex, anyway? I read or heard somewhere that most men don't even moan more than absolutely necessary thinking that it's an effeminate thing to do.
