Punishment
Strangers
A friend told me that she thought that Luca Guadagnino’s movie “I am love” was the best movie she had seen this year.
It’s not a bad movie at all, but I was not as enthusiastic as my friend.
“I am love” (the title borders on tackiness, but so does the first half of the movie) is based on a few premises:
- The unfaithful woman should be punished severely. For the audience this is half of the joy of her unfaithfulness and perhaps in a twisted way this is half of the joy for the unfaithful woman as well.
- Love goes through the stomach, not only for men also for women.
- Sexual attraction is the extension of class warfare.
- The haute bourgeoisie doesn’t accept strangers.
- Some women like to exchange recipes while making love.
- The servants serve the food and when all is said and done they will love you more than your own family.
The movie is worth seeing, especially because of the last twenty minutes.
And it confirmed something a friend told me over lunch: if you want to pick up a woman on the New York subway start reading a cookbook. To avoid misunderstandings: the movie isn’t set in New York, but food plays an important role in "I am love".

Why should the unfaithful woman be punished severely? This is proof for me of a typical masculin morality, a patriarchal society which wants to control the women.
It all sounds very cliché.

The woman is named Emma...
Punishment is part of the pleasure. Especially for the audience.

Punishment
Reminds me slightly about the movie "Looking for Mr. Goodbar’’

That reminds me very much of Saudi Arabia where women are being stoned because of their (believed) infidelity. All with great pleasure for the audience.

A rather crude metaphor.
My sister has two cats. One has been neutered, the other one is in heat at the moment. This last cat walks around the house miaowing all the time (in a plaintive way). Sometimes she is let out on a rope , which serves purpose as a leash, in the flowery garden at the back of the house. Every once in a while she puts her butt in the air and starts rubbing whatever is around. The feelings my sister has about this behavior are ambigious. This cat usually is very shy and not interested in petting, but since she has this condition, there is nothing she likes more than rubbing her lower back.
I was thinking yesterday that this cat is being punished too. Whether this cat is on a leash or not, if the tomcat wants a quick hump, he'll come to the garden.

That's inherent to clichés.
Btw, in my book love is a mental state, it has little in common with the stomach. Sex on the other hand, that's about taking care of the primal, just like food, needs.
