Girlfriend
Mother
Last night I attended the opening of the temporary Grunberg Museum in a bookstore in the Dutch city of Arnhem.
One of the guests of honor was my first girlfriend. We had a brief affair – if that’s the word – when we were both 15.
Last night we exchanged a few words.
She told me that she had two children, one five-year-old and one seven-year-old.
"It is nice to be a mother?" I asked her. Not the most intelligent question I could have asked her, but it was late and I was tired.
She guffawed and then she said: “Yes, it’s nice to be a mother.”

Rosie?
It was nice to meet you Arnon.
Wouldnt it be nice if this feeling goes for every mother.

Wouldn't it be nice if this went for every child? I hated my mother when I was a toddler.
I loved my mother when I was younger, so much younger than before. One might say I had an Oedipus complex, but I didn't. My father could love my mother all he wanted, I didn't care. I haven't tried three-cornered relationships after that one ended yet.

Yes, especially when she is dead.
The difficulty with being a Dutchophile
This chain of bookstores wants to charge me 30 euros to send a Dutch language book to America. That sucks. You can't imagine how tough it is to get your books, any Dutch books, here. Not only is it kinda sad so many Dutch are so ga-ga over English and American crap that they are blind to what's brilliant about their own country and language, even your second hand book stores are putting up ridiculous tariffs to keep your language inside your borders. That's a formula for extinction if you ask me. And the exchange rate sucks, too.
Steve
