Rabble

The night

In an excellent essay on Sándor Márai, published in his collection “Inner Workings”, Coetzee writes: “He [Márai] has behaved like a caricature of the bourgeois intellectual, scorning the rabble of the right and the rabble of the left, retreating into his private enjoyments.”

It’s understandable and to a certain degree defendable to scorn the hoi polloi, as long as you keep your private enjoyments limited to the night.

'private'
Ah well... you can enjoy any private enjoyments during the day as well!
24/7 in fact.
As long as you keep them private of course....

Reading your last sentence over and over again, I get more and more puzzled.
What the hell do you mean?
'as long as you keep your private enjoyments.... to the night...'?!
Why would you keep them for the night?
You relegate all your 'private enjoyments' to your sleep/the night/your dreams?
Please elaborate, I don't get it, I even think you are talking nonsense here!

You've won your bet!
Your blog entree at the end of last month encouraged me and three friends to check out café Le Cirio in Brussels today. It was very enjoyable between the 200 year old looking ladies with fab hairdos and had it been up to me I'd still be there now drinking half en halfs. So thank you for the tip Arnon.

Cirio is an institute in Brussels, but normally only for the incrowd.
