Canapé
Identity
Yesterday I was in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, for the Kellendonk - reading.
I had to give the lecture at the medical faculty because the auditorium at the language department turned out to be too small.
The lecture hall was fit to show 450 students or more body parts in various degrees of dissolution.
I spoke for 55 minutes about identity, paranoia and irony and afterwards there was white and red wine, orange juice and canapés.
The organizer of the reading, a man in his early fifties, seemed to enjoy the reception and the dinner that came after the canapés tremendously.
And I have to admit: all together it was less stiff than I expected.

Dear Mr Grunberg,
I've just read another brilliant peace of work of you, and I just wanted to congratulate you with your never-ending interesting, hopelessly funny ....amazing talented writing you deliver each time. I'm referring to your latest contrbution to the Dutch newspaper NRC Next; your second report about your visit to Gitmo. My God, Grunberg, you just keep on going and everytime you manage to give your work a new impulse (for example, the blog of Tirza - and the book itself, of course - was, again, genius).
I realize this is the place where you're supposed to react on the messages on your blog, and not really for (only) kissing arses. But I just had to get it of my chest in case I'll never meet you; I've missed the reading, and the contest. So just eliminate my message after you've read it. I wish you all the best,
Kind regards, Julia
The Kellendonk reading? So you see, a controversial artist is always very attractive when he’s dead. I assume in Antwerp, the academics already thinking about a ‘Jean-Marie Berckmans reading’ (sorry Mr. Berckmans, I hope you are forever).

I would argue that there is a difference in quality between the novels of Mr. Berckmans and those of Mr. Kellendonk.
If you are interested in the reading itself, buy this week's Vrij Nederland or contact my assistant at

Tirza
Beste Arnon,
@Arnon Grunberg
II agree for the difference in quality. I am interested in the reading, thank you for the information.
@Julia van Steennis
As I said here before, nobody feels uncomfortable cheering for accomplishments of sports(wo)men. So why feeling embarrassed for emotions of approval for the masters of the intellect?

Ook de lezer die debuteert met Tirza zal gefascineerd raken door het vakkundig afpellen van de rokken der beschaving van deze Germanist-criminoloog. De vraag is dan ook: vervangt Hofman definitief Bateman?
@ to all
the 'lectures' will be published in Vrij Nederland, nr° 2007/07 on 17/02/2007.
