Arnon Grunberg

Welcome

Prussians

Last night, after the reading I told the audience that I will be in Munich for two months this fall to write a play for the Munich Kammerspiele. The play should take place in contemporary Bavaria. I asked the audience, slightly in jest, if they had any ideas or suggestions.
After the reading a middle-aged lady approached me. “I’m from Austria,” she said, “but I’ve been living in Bavaria for the last twenty years. The Bavarians don’t like people who are not Bavarian.” A man chimed in: “They like Prussians even less than Austrians.”
