The last time I saw him

Rain

“Amante” came to visit me for two days in Dublin.
Because of the rain she suggested we should paint. (Another time she convinced me that we should buy clay and make a small statue.)
In the late nineties I painted quite a lot under the influence of Pablo van Dijk, a fairly beautiful con man who disappeared out of my life as con men tend to do. (The last time I saw him the booze and his beauty seemed to be competitors; the booze was winning.)

Did Pablo paint self-portraits? Have you ever done so? Oh and where is Timme these days, seeing as we've now touched the topic of beauty?
con
what the fuck is a con man?
dry paint
@ arnon, interesting painting, did you make it yourself and how long did it take to dry?
@jc herman about con men:

drinking
ah,
A confidence man is someone who takes advantage of someone else usually for financial gain using what is known as a confidence trick. They are sometimes known as 'con men' or 'con artists'

so, maybe the painting is depecting booze winning from beauty
Judging from the photo, your painting qualities have developed strongly over the last years. I own one of your masterpieces from the late nineties ("Ze stond daar verdomme mooi de stralende hoer C te wezen"), in which the text strongly helped increase the artistic value (to say the least). Apparently your amante is a much better muse than PvD. (Or did she do most of the painting and were you her muse, which could also explain the progress?)
In your case the con man, as a stimulator, has some merits, but his booze is for real now.
enough about conmen and booze i'd say lets talk about the way this painting is presented. i think the kitchen is asking too much attention, and why is it on the stove? to dry the paint? so many questions...
clean
The studio looks too clean for a painter. But it's a good reference for the size of the painting. I think all the colors of the painting set are used with small size brushes, is a unique painting style though.
Pel
FYI, paint is not yet dry.
I smell Hugo.
Dens
Hugo who?
Ron L & Pel
Ron: How much did you pay for the painting you acquired in the late nineties if I may ask?
FYI the left part of this painting (untitled yet) is painted by me, the right part is painted by “amante” who claims that she painted my mother.
Pel, not all brushes where the same seize.
Noa
As far as I know Pablo was an art dealer not a painter but who knows, maybe he is painting these days.
arnon
i am happy to know that the painting is a colleboration and painted with different seizes of brushes.
Pel
If you need more info let me know, the painting is not for sale.
when you were still affordable
Arnon, I bought the painting a couple of years ago for €275. The seller even threw in a set of your "happy holidays" coasters. Both welcome additions to my collection (which will probably never be complete given your present market value).
Sorry, I made a typo: I paid €375. In the most recent Grunberg catalogue I know of (En Passant, november 2006) it was offered for €675.
Paintings
Ron,
In the catalog of En Passant (November 2006) the paintings were offered for 475 euros. By the way, in the Literary Museum in The Hague there is also a painting by Arnon in the Portrait Gallery.
Johannes, that's true for the "Mijn schilderijen hebben wat mijn literatuur zo mist" paintings (item nr 137). I refer to item nr 129.
Ze stond daar verdomme
Ron,
Ok, right, that's the one with the poem. I saw you mentioned it above.
Would you be so kind to take a nice picture of te painting and send it to me to add it to the bibliophilic department of this site?
johannes@arnongrunberg.com
Johannes, sure. How about all the other KENY productions? Do you want to include those too? I have some 15 more that are not in the oeuvre section and there are still more that are missing both in my collection and the oeuvre section.
Missing in both the oeuvre section and the En Passant catalogue is the play "You are also very attractive when you are dead" (published by Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf if I'm not mistaken).
USA-bibliophilic
Ron,
Thanks!
But check out USA/Canada (bibliophilic) to find those KENY-books.
I think that's a complete list, only Ze stond daar verdomme.... was missing.
Schauspielhaus
PS And for the play, see Germany (Other). But please contact me directly.
Johannes, you are absolutely correct. I only checked the dutch section. My apologies. I seem to suffer form this recent dutch phenomenon that seems to be contageous: take a national perspective and forget that the world is bigger. I'll send you the picture soon.
Ron Lander
What En Passant is charging is ridiculous – a warmhearted young man is working at En Passant, but somebody should force him to be more realistic about the prices, maybe the invisible hand of the market?
Anyhow I don’t know who has everything when it comes to collecting my work. Maybe Mr. Oexman. Maybe.
I meant Hugo Claus. But I liked that you could take Hugo for Boss as well. But Claus' paintings aren't as good as well. I'm not saying that this isn't that good, but it's not mindblowing, is it.
Last time I saw PVD
He was drunk as a goat. He smelled like a pig and smoked like an animal.
He had broken his ankle due to alcoholism on a city street of Manhattan.
And he tried to sell me some useless art.
Does anybody know anything about him ?
