Inclusive

Wave

Die Zeit on tolerance in Germany:

'Despite several Islamist attacks, despite all the debates over Islam and whether it "belongs" to Germany, despite growing tensions with Turkey, 82 percent of respondents say that "people from other religions" are part of "We." As are "homosexuals" (80 percent), "people with a completely different lifestyle" (73 percent), and "foreigners/migrants" (72 percent). Even that group of people who weighed heavily on Germany's collective psyche are seen as belonging to "We": Seventy-one percent of respondents say that refugees are part of "We."

Such numbers seem more consistent with the euphoria that greeted the arrival of the first wave of refugees in 2015 than they do with late-summer 2017. A society can't get much more inclusive.'

Despite the rise of the AfD a vast majority is closer to Merkel than to extremism. At least for now, no need for alarmism.
