Finzi-Contini

If you come back

This afternoon my French teacher and I were reading an article in Le Monde on Carla Bruni-Tedeschi, the significant other of the president of France, Mr. Sarkozy.
The author compared the lives of the Bruni-Tedeschi’s with Bassani’s beautiful novel “The garden of the Finzi-Contini’s”. Not without reason.
In another article the rumor was mentioned that Sarkozy had sent a text message to his ex-wife eight days before the wedding: “If you come back I’ll cancel everything.” Meaning: the marriage with Carla Bruni.
I would have done this differently; I would have written: “I still hesitate, but if you come back I would go full speed ahead.” There are indications that Mr. Sarkozy is losing his mind. But he is very colorful, compared to most European leaders.

You mean, full speed ahead with Carla?
I think Berlusconi is colourful too.
You gotta be kidding. He has become the laughingstock of the nation. Even people who voted for him now think he's a clown. As for Carla, she just looks like a copy of his ex-wife.
Mr. Sarkozy may be colorful, but he has no taste in women.

It depends. Mr. Sarkozy seems to be a social climber, his taste in women reflects that. I'm not opposed to social climbers by the way.
Taste
I agree with Arnon. Taste is relative, and one tends to develop his or her taste on the basis of ones view (s) of life (in general)
I wouldn't go so far as to say he has no taste in women. It is definitely not MY taste but then again my taste will most certainly not be Mr. Sarkozy's taste.
And I agree with Arnon that it seems like Carla will be able to fill in perfectly as a wife and as his social companion on society's ladder.

Still...One question to Arnon... What exactly are the indications that Mr. Sarkozy is losing his mind ? I cannot imagine it solely depends on his choice in women, or does it ?
@Arnon
I am not really in favor of social climbing. Too much social climbing leads to social erosion. All those intelligent young Turks on the top provoke to much confusion, and the lower echelons remain with the residue of stupidity. It is a blueprint for a unbalanced society. Here a highly intelligent mason and there an inert boss, would give a more stable and easy going social structure. At least that is my attempt to a theory.
But then, who wants to be a low payee mason now.

Ok, she has kind of a nice ass on this picture.
Kind of? She's plain gorgeous.
I for one was convinced he's been mad for quite a while now. Unfortunately, now that more and more medias are turning against him and his ratings are dropping by the minute, I can't help starting to sympathize. I sure didn't vote for him and still wouldn't now, but in all honesty one must admit he's passed some good laws and he sure is dedicated. Besides, he lives up to ze french stereotypes the way nasty mustached cops and long haired stoned students do ; and that in itself make the world a clearer place. And I am not into easy lynching.
I like a woman with boots:
“These boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do
one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you”

By the way, have you noticed the change in Obama’s public behaviour on stage. Something got hold of him. Quite interesting how he attracts people now (men and women).

But why is Sarkozy more typically French than let's say Mitterand?
