Morality

What it remains

In his book “Men, Women and War” Martin van Creveld writes: “Before it was anything else, war was an assertion of masculinity. When everything is said and done, an assertion of masculinity is what it remains.” This is offensive to many, conservative idealists and Marxists to name just a few, but it is true.
First comes the assertion of masculinity, then the morality.

(For me, it is a very good ananlysis of war, not a promotion though.)
super article .... now ...How to find the solution to stop the war and give the men the freedom they need so badly to feel complete man identity?
I think masculinity is a hollow concept. The real motivation is to overcome the fear of death in a symbolic way, thats why we like heroes so much. Ernest Becker wrote really insightful things about this in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Denial_of_Death
Jan,
Thank you for the article.
very interesting ,thanks.
Sports
They can assert their masculinity in sports, according to Martin van Creveld's collegue, Prof. Moshe Zimmerman.
Give the boys their toys and let them play a game. Is that satisfying enough?
Helen, I don't know if you addressed this question to me but I have the same doubts. Still, I was thinking of the Olympics as a once in a four years, agreed and organised War World. I guess that if the same budgets were streaming to this event it could have been as agressive as the less sportive wars. I don't know if Zimmerman said it jokingly, and I'm not sure whether he acknowledges anything that is not football as a sport. But I'll do my best to look for a more comprehenssive writen piece on that.
Would there be less wars if women were 'in charge'?
What would come first then? The assertion of their femininity?
If van Creveld is right and that man can't stand women on the battlefield because this means loosing their honour, than ladies maybe it is time that we all join the army and volunteer to fight onthe first row.
Maybe that will put on end to war.

Yes it was my answer on your comment. Would violent computergames solve the problem too to sublimate masculinity? Could be a solution I guess.

Vera, I don’t know if I understand you properly, but I always thought most women talk ( or blog) their problems and frustrations away . In the meanwhile they strongly try to be loved and not so many women want to be heroic ( except Hillary , Jeanne dÁrc and Betty Boop) to get immortal satisfaction.
Mieke,
When we go to the frontlines?
Mieke, Helen,
Women on the frontline and on the other side women on the frontline?
That means war. Or do you think they have tea together and start chatting about their children? Women can be very mean to each other.
we drop the bitches in a spa
Helen, what I brought was not my idea about this issue but Zimmerman's. Personally I think there's absolutely no difference between men and women in this regard. Insensitive people are brought up by insensitive parents of both sexes (though still ususally by the mother), so behind every happy-to-fight-man there's probably not good enough mother. I don't think biology explains everything. I also think we need to study antropological researches on matriarchal cultures to compare it with western histories. If women do 90% of the work on Earth they can fight on the field too. Anyway, I wonder if the whole discussion is relevant so long infantry forces are becoming less and less important. But i'm not an strategist and besides, anyone can press the red button, even the cleaning lady, by mistake ;)).
A question to all the women here: do you love wariors?

My opinion on your presence on this site has not changed: I really don’t appreciate it.
Arnon - apologies then.
@Joep
Thanks for the Ernest Becker link too.
Bombing people from an airplane or from behind a computer is not my idea of masculinity.
