Poker
A winning strategy
On Friday night I played poker with a couple of officers in Camp Taji. I followed the same strategy as in Brooklyn where I used to play poker every month.
No matter how shitty my cards are I raise the bet.
In Brooklyn this turned out to be a losing but entertaining strategy.
In Iraq for once it was a winning strategy.
But it’s not because of a few dollars that Friday night was my first really happy evening in Iraq.

I only play computer games, I do not like to lose and I am afraid to win, so nobody gets hurt.
@jan
except for you
I have never played poker I have to admit. Great your strategy seemed to work.
My father in law is from Brooklyn. A good poker-player. I always wanted to ask him to teach me, but untill now I never did.
Arnon, what was it then that made friday evening really happy (I hope I'm not impolite in asking)? Being able to relax, the company of officers, playing poker again?
I don't like pokerplayers who raise every bet. It's a strategy alright, but an aggrevating one, I'd say. My pokerstrategy is Tight-Agressive, and played submissively when I've got a good hand. That means that I'd check when I know I'm winning, and raise the hell later on.

I don't know, the illusion of 'normality' maybe.
Ron, Arnon,
These happy moments when we don't know where happiness comes from
must be the most happy ones. In Iraq or in Puurs.

Off topic, but I started reading your book (I have some affection with the subject) and I must confess, it was a pleasant surprise. Sometimes I think we had the same schoolteacher, as you like short sentences.
