Confetti
Romance
‘A long string of confetti is mistaken for spaghetti and gets eaten. A piece of soap, taken for cheese, is placed on bread and also is consumed. A man trying to commit suicide ties one end of a rope around a heavy rock but accidentally slips the noose at the other end around the neck of a friend, and then heaves the rock into the water. “City Lights,” Charlie Chaplin’s “comedy romance in pantomime,” from 1931, is about the hapless transfer of objects in an unstable and dangerous world,’ writes David Denby in The New Yorker.
Last night I went to see “City Lights” in Film Forum. It remains a potent movie, much better than most what is currently out there.

(Long time ago I saw that beautiful movie.)
An unstable (and dangerous) world? Sometimes when I look at the sky at night, I chuckle – where are we ? - those spinning little balls in that deep dark space, this is worse than a Luna park.

Last night I saw "Modern Times."
"City Lights" might be even a better movie than "Modern Times".
Arnon, you saw both movies at one evening?
Jeanette
Nope. "City Lights" on Saturday; "Modern Times" on Sunday.
City Lights was much better than most movies that were out there then.
Arnon
You keep me busy. Last week I had to discover Die Dreigroschenoper and now I find myself watching Charlie Chaplins City Lights, just to be able to follow your blog. I guess that is the price I have to pay for my sub-standard knowledge of interbellum culture.
Actually it might be a nice idea to add a feature to the HTML site where you note all the books, movies and music you read, watch and listen with a short rating.
Sander
What do you like about the dreigroschenoper?
Sander
That's an excellent idea.

I couldn't get the music out of my head for the whole weekend. Had it in my head when going to bed and it continued even after breakfast. I would never play Der Kanonensong after sex, or before.
After realizing the analogy between the canon and the penis the whole text became absurd. Seeing the male half of humanity as an army that transforms all the brown and pale women into 'Beefsteak Tartare' with their canons is too ironic for my taste to play for a lady after being with her.
I tend to fall asleep after sex. I'm not sure if that is seen as a compliment.
Sander
I never would recommend this sort of music before, during or after having sex, in my opinion Lotte Lenya’s voice isn’t good for your mood (talkin gabout sex)
I think Arnon has a very difrent way of enjoying sex, a very strange and maybe also ruff way, if he tells us he likes this songs. Or it’s only provocating. (and that’s what i think)
Charles Chaplin is great by the way; i like all of his movies.

Have you considered adding a search option for comments?
Oscar Wilde
Yes, that is already done.
Sander
Where can I find this search function?
D.M. Pefko
I'm not sure what you mean with this comment: "Arnon has a very different way of enjoying sex, a very strange and maybe also ruff way."
I once had to do a review of Modern Times (new dvd) as a trailer selfexplaining how good this movie was. I had to cancel the job, it was too hard. This movie is a great movie, any cut-up would do it no right.
@Sander
Do not worry to fall asleep after sex. As long as you do not act as that guy, I once knew, who fell asleep ON his spouse – that is not decent.
I presume the search function is on the new version of this site. I am looking forward to it.
I'm sorry for not being clear, the search function will be in the new version of the site. That part is already built. Once the site is as good as finished, I will invite you to try it out before we put it online.

It's a great feeling when a man falls asleep on top of you, after having performed his duty. It awakes a great tenderness in me.
Arnon
It’s just a feeling Arnon, if you tel lus you listen to the kanonensong after seks, i have the feeling you enjoy sex in a totaly different way than the average person. What i meant was that you maybe see seks like a huge battle, and when the war is over you listen to Kurt Weill, the kanonensong, and you drink sweet white wine.
Mieke
Don't you think its very stupid?
@Mieke
Now you mentioned it – on second thought – I like too be covered by a woman too. Nice and warm. After all we are not that different, it seems.
But a here the problem arises: who will com first? I mean, who will cover first.
Pefko
What? That a man falls asleep on top of you? No, I don't think so.
Bernard
Toss for it.
@Arnon
Yes, I prefer City Lights over Modern Times. But on the whole I like Chaplin movies most for their secondary characters: the big angry bearded man, the tiny bellboy, the nervous dwarf, the seductive young girl, the moody house keeper etcetera. A beautiful cast.
