My favorite word in the inaugural address was “nonbelievers”.
“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth.”
I hope to be still alive when an ardent nonbeliever will be elected President of the United States.
I often hear people ask: “Will he be good for the Jews?”
My question is: “Will he be good for the nonbelievers?”
I’m moderately optimistic.

Remarkable indeed, for a US president.
(Ah, the nonbelievers, they simply do not believe what other people pretend to know about God)
Yesterday you talked about moral responsibility. Today I'd like to implement it in your thinking.
Wouln't it be a very hard, not to say impossible, task for one man to rule 260 million people when he has no man/thing or God above him? Moral limits may be put on a god, but on a man?
In the old England some kings said "The Church is me" but it never worked out. In English there's a language structure in which you distinguish needs, permission, etc. It's called "modality"; I believe if you use hearer-oriented deontic modality, you must have a higher power to be the speaker. If you say "you must do this" and you're a man elected for 4 years, or you're a man with a highers sense of right thanks to a god.. Makes all the difference.

Do we need a god to behave according to a certain widely accepted set of rules?
Do you trust a ruler who believes in a god more than a ruler who is a nonbeliever?
I, personally, believe in a person who's not a believer, but someone who never stops to (re)search. But I am not the majority. I believe most people need a god to set out rules. If you take it smaller, you see this ocurring in fitness-guru's, personal coaches, CEO's, consultants for CEO's, and those who are those small gods have literature, bigger coaches, or even a god.
I do believe man is not made to be free and is at best constricted by a god. In worst cases they're bound by their husband, boss, advertisement, charismatic speakers, money, etc.
Two things that disappointed me about the inaugural event.
1. The preacher who ended his speech with an "Our Father." So much for secularism.
2. "We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth." Whether it's true or not, I can handle the word prosperous, but powerful?

I also believe most people need a god to set out rules. I also believe that all those people would be bad presidents.
It was nice and magic performance (that's what emperors are good at) but dream on... nothing is gonna change.
Like Clinton was a good guy, and Bush was a bad guy... But guess what, Clinton had as much wars as Bush.... and so will Obama.
Right. Bush I started the Gulf War I, Clinton merely inherited it. Bush II started a war in Afghanistan and Gulf War II. 3-0 for the Bush clan when I count.
Sandy, you forgot Balkan wars. Clinton bombed Bosnian Serbs + entire Serbia itself (Kosovo conflict).
if I don't count his minor engagements in Africa (bombing a pharmacy company in the Sudan) and in Croatia (expelling plus/min 250 000 Serbian refugees out of Croatia) and similar crap, then it would be at least: 3:3.
But in the same time his magicians created that Lewinsky scandal, so the world was more interested in his sexual affairs then in his wars. That's how politics work.. so I understand.
You are not seriously suggesting that Iraq and Afghanistan and The balkan and Sudan are in any way comparable. Without even trying to compare the "badness" of different wars, the fundamental difference lies in that the latter two were isolated military acts in wars where the UN decided to interfere as a third party in existing conflicts, whereas in the former two the US president actually singelhandedly decided to start full-scale wars creating outrage and protests all over the rest of the world. No Lewinsky could've blown (pun is intended) a smokescreen large enough to cover that up.
Sandy, I won't go into the discussion with you about any of those wars and the nature of those wars, as it was not my point. Arnon wouldn't apreciate it either I guess..
My point is, it doesn't matter who is the president, white guy, black guy, believer, nonbeliever, man or even a woman...

Have you found your god?
Or do you live without rules?
I am still looking, searchin and exploring, but as it's known, I like jewish rules.
I was talking about a god with some friends of mine. All of them believe in "something" and I don't. When I was younger, I had some god I guess. But I don't know if this was my father, or a real god. I just addressed my thoughts to someone. Now I address my thoughts mainly to you, Mr. Arnon. Does that make you my god?
I think I'd like to believe in a god. It has this feeling of comfort around it.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the name for the initial operation in Afghanistan that followed September 11 was, if my memory serves me right, supported by most countries. If that makes the operation effective (and just) is a different question.

If you buy my computer for 500 US dollars I'll be your God till the end of your life. This is an once in your lifetime opportunity. And it's an offer only available to you, Dens. Because I have selected you and your sister as my chosen people. Please tell your sister that she has been selected. Be kind enough to tell her boyfriend that he has not been selected.
I hope in four years time he'll talk about the non-believers and the non-non-believers.
Mr. Arnon
If I was deattached from my mother, I would have bought your computer for a 1000 dollars, but even know, If I buy it for 50 dollars, my mother would damage me permanently and I would be stuck with a God who will not be able to console.
Me not buying the computer is not a matter of money, just of circumstances. One might not see it about me, but I live in a high voltage environment. The slightest spark may set everything on fire and I don't know if 'm burnproof.
I told about your offer to my sister. She said "Why does he say stuff like that? He doesn't even know me. I don't even know him. Didn't he have a girlfriend? I am not at all pleased with this offer."

The computer has been sold for over four hundred US dollars. Never mind. Your sister’s reaction is very encouraging. What’s her full name? I want to buy her a ticket to New York, so I can explain the rest of her life to her.
When she asks “why?” just answer: “Because you are the sister of Dens.”
My favorite word: Muslims
Why not use a capital like all the other 'groups'?
---- Nonbelievers instead of nonbelievers
Once again I asked my sister. She called you a "kwiet" that means "silly man" in my dialect. She said she couldn't live with the thought of disappointing you and she was sure you would be disappointed. I asked why and she said "well, if you want to see someone you don't know, you make an image that's better than the truth."
I must admit she seemed to be liking the offer as well, just as an offer. To make her realize she wasn't lost forever. Her horoscope today said she'd be meeting a new love in april.

I feel your sister is getting ready for New York.
When does she want to come?
I don't expext anything from her except a kiss on my forehead.
