Singer
Over lunch
The new girlfriend of a friend of mine is a singer.
Last night she performed in Dublin.
Over lunch she proposed that I become her Maecenas or her sponsor.
I would love to be a Maecenas.

Mr. Arnon
Perhaps you could ask her to write a hymn about you.
Victor
She is working already on a hymn on my both my work and my body. (Although I have to admit she is having problems with my legs.)
Forgive me for asking but what is your contribution to my greatness?
What would you want in return? An epos? A metion in every interview?

When it comes to you all I ask is your sister.
Arnon
I buy your books and advise your writings to friends, I consider that as a satisfying contribution. What's the matter with your legs?
I visited her myspace-page but perhaps I'm not in the right stage of my life to appreciate minimalist music. At the moment I prefer Regina Spektor when it comes to female singers.
I can't give you my sister, but you can have my mother.
Victor
The beauty of my left leg is contested by some self-appointed experts on legs.
Dens
Are you sure your mother doesn't mind being second choice?
I own a CD made by one of the former girlfriends of a former friend of yours. The cover mentions the “supreme inspiration and sexual guidance provided by Arnon Grunberg and the University of Love”. Maybe it's an idea for a series of CD's inspired by Grunberg? To be published ultimately in an exclusive collector's edition box to be titled Our Muse? It could also function as a compensation for those of us who are still waiting for the publication of Our Pope.
Mr. Arnon
Would you tell her she's second choice?
Dens
Tell your mother there is nothing wrong with being second, or third or even fifth choice, if you are chosen by Arnon. :))
Arnon
Nice statue. I can provide you one with your features if you want to.
Dens
Never, I'm a gentleman.
Arnon
My contribution: I will write a jazzpiece entitled "Arnon Grunberg" I let you know when it's finished.
@Arnon
Aren’t you already her supporter?
(Of course you can be a Maecenas – I think you already are one of a kind.)
By the way, I liked your column last week, in Humo about Hillary Clinton, very much; it was so beautiful and sad that it made me laugh.
Dear Maecenas,
Are you by any chance planning on supporting more musicians? I present to you: Circus Circus Casino, a band of four young musicians from Amsterdam.

Thank you!

In this economy all I can offer you at the moment is thirty euros.
Arnon
Thank you for this most generous offer. But I find it hard to accept it (30 euro's is a lot of money these days), though I would be greatly honoured if you would support us. You could also support us for, let's say, 30 cents. Yes, we are cheap.

I would love to hear it , when it's ready. Jeanette asked me once if Arnon was rock and roll. I said no, but I definitely think he's Jazz.
Mieke
Jazz..., I'm curious what makes you think so.
I'm still not sure of the R&R percentage, but Jazz hasn't come to my mind while listening/looking on the evening of the reading.
