I've been looking for a word that could describe people waiting for a train on a railway platform. Too bad I can't find a good translation for "sheeple" in Dutch.

My first impression was that ‘Fat Bob’ was a nick name for a kind of new attack helicopter class. Tricked by an image and my own molded mind, I am afraid.

Let me pitch the word "Volgk" as a Dutch translation? "Het volgend volk"

In dutch the existing words 'bups', 'meute' and 'horde' cover it rather well, I guess.

In a political context the word 'kiesvee' seems to do the trick.

Dutch equivalent - schaapsen

'Schaapsen' or 'Schensen' wouId be Dutch equivalents based on the same principle as the English word. I think I prefer 'schaapsen'. Used in a sentence: "De kudde schaapsen was bezig oranje vlaggetjes op te hangen in verband met het aanstaande EK-voetbal."

A better word for 'volgend volk' might ber "volvo", although you might get into a dsipute with a Scabdinavian car manufacturer on the intellectual property rights in relation to the term.

'Volgk' sounds like a Ukranian curseword or somebody thrying to (but not quite succeeding at) clearing his throath. Plus, I get the impression that the word 'volk' is rather oldfashioned and hardly ever used anymore. It has been replaced bij 'hard werkende mensen', at least in the political debate in the Netherlands.

Words as "meute" or "kudde" would do fine, but I'm searching for a neologism. I have to say I like "schaapsen". I sure could use a Dutch speaking Lewis Carroll.

In the schaapsen perspective sheeple may as well be a combination of sheep and apple or sheep and simple. Sheeple still sounds like people and at the same time it refers to sheep’s. In my opinion schaapsen lacks this equal intonation, it also has no a singular form. To a certain extent I would think of someone sluggishly skating . Maybe schaapsel would come closer but I think a suitable interpretation remains.

I think in the word sheeple there is still a connection with the word people. Saying sheeple is like saying people; in pronunciation only the first two letters have changed.
Mensen plus schapen maybe schaapsen. But so is schapen plus gidsen or bruisen. In schaapsen there is a connection with schapen but a clear connection with mensen is missing.
You are right about the singular form. It does remind me of daaps plus schaap though. But maybe I am niggling.

I agree on this: sheeple does share a stronger connection with people than schaapsen with mensen. When translating a word into another language or when creating a neologism that contains the same qualities as the word in the other language it's very difficult, if not impossible to find a perfect match.
