Sadr City

The Prophet's birthday

Yesterday we celebrated the Prophet’s birthday. That’s why the boys in this orphanage in Sadr City are wearing hats and eating cake. (There are no girls in the orphanage.)
Some people warned me not to go to Sadr City but the trip was pleasant and fruitful.

Below: a citizen of Sadr City in his living room.

The man looks happy with your visit.
(He wears the same kind of Djellabah my friend recently offered me)
Nice, very nice.
You should wear a cloth like that as well;
A Jew and an Arab, happily together on a couch. A sight to foster.
Ball of books
Arnon, would asking to use your invitiation to the ball tonight and pretending to be you (I solemnly promise, I'll wear glasses and jeans and I'll gladly take your amante) be pushing things? What am I thinking, right? I guessed as much.
lovely old man

I think he is not. He has a smile, true.. but his body tells that he might feel uneasy.
Make-Up Artist
Your insights into body language are truly amazing.
Arnon
Thank you.
@Make-Up Artist
My weak point, I am afraid. And that is the reason why I watch the new TV series ‘Lie to me’, I think.
For you, working with people, that quality must be very useful. Interesting site you have, by the way.
Bernard f
Thank you too. Yes, the aspects of body language are very important for my work, as the most models are young and far less self confident then adults. Also the models will preferably smile, just like this Iraqi guy on the picture, but their bodies tell far more... sometimes completely the oposite.

But it's nog my work only, it's also my hobby. I often just sit in a pub and watch people, without talking to them. I let their bodies talk to me. Like here:

and here:

And sometimes things just happen... like here:

The guy on the picture, sitting next to Arnon is easy one. His shoulders are lifted (too) high, his legs are crossed and he holds something in his right fist really tight... The way he sits is all but natural and relaxed.

I think its more tricky than this.
most people just dont feel relaxed while being photographed.
So when you see a photo of someone, you can not really judge what was he like before the flash.
Andrea
I haven't judge him what was he like before the picture was taken. I am/was judging the picture only. For the rest we don't know what was the reason he apears on the picture like that... it could be anything, from a camera flash, to the fact that Arnon touches him.
artist
in this case I agree.
for this very reason I love photos made without the attention of the person.
you get the better idea what is really going on.
(and it tickles my voyeurism too)
Andrea
Maybe Arnon intruded his personal space. ;-)

I don't agree with your interpretation of Arnon's body language. Arnon is used to being photographe d and being watched. If you want to see an Arnon who is not at ease, take a look at the pictures taken from him at the literary price events like Ako and Libris, especially the one when he had the dispute with A.F.Th..
Mieke
We're not talking here about Arnon's body language.
Arnon
True, I've read your comments too fast, but still you suggest Arnon maybe intruded his personal space. Arnon would immediate have taken some distance in respons to the uneasiness of the man.
Correction :previous comment is for Make-up artist.
And I would like to add, What I see is a man an the edge of the couch , upright, like he almost wants to jump to the camera and who is very pleased with the attention. I don't see uneasiness.
Make-Up Artist
I can only repeat my statement: your insights are amazing.
Mieke
"but still you suggest Arnon maybe intruded his personal space."

I also placed a smiley after my suggestion, which means = I meant it as a joke.
For the rest, it's perfectly OK for people to disagree on some things.
Arnon
Thanks once more!
Make-Up Artist,
Once when we were discussing food allergies here I've mentioned a research about peanuts and the name of a scientist. This scientist is a dietian and has an equivalent to a Ph.d (but in sciences). From Arnon's scorn to her I realized he has a britle ego. The fact that body language interests you and others does not protect you from Arnon's scorn.
The best lesson I have learned from Arnon is not to expect for anything. Also not for silent kindness.
Neria
I have no expectations from Arnon or anyone else. Maybe I'm here for my own selfish purpose. I take people as they apear to be - now - not as they were yesterday or they'll be tomorrow (both irrelevant to me)
Make-Up Artist,
"...as they appear to be". This is pure poetry, considering the nickname :))
Make-Up Artist
I maen the irony :)) Control the way people 'appear to be' by makeuping them and then take them "as they are". I just stretched it of course, I hope you do understand the silly joke :)
Neria
I understand that you first you wanted to discredit Arnon, and now you're focused on me. Is it actually not you having a problem here? And if so, what's your problem exactly?

Never the less, I'll be kind to you and I'll tell you a secret. Once you start doing make-up and you become a professional, you then soon realise that true beauty comes from inside!

Or to put it in plain words, if your personality sucks, no make-up artist in this world can make you look beautiful. Not even you have perfect shapes on your own... You'll still look ugly.

The bottom line in make-up (as a profession) is not to transform people in what they are not, to give them something they don't have.. but to put more accent on what they already have.

It's actually quite simple, you have it (in you), or you don't.

P.S. I love jokes. :)
Make-up Artist,
Humor is very inportant.
important
(I hardly see anything in the darkness :))
Neria
That's very dark... lately I've been with a black woman. Have some mercy on my soul please. ;-)
Make-up Artist,
Was it in the dark?
Neria
Absolutely nothing.
