I refuse

Mouthpiece

“I refuse,” my mother shouted. “I’m not going to use this mouthpiece.” She was in the hospital for a lung function test, among other tests. I was one of her three escorts.
I had to talk to her for more than ten minutes in order to convince her that the mouthpiece was perfectly sterile.

I think you mean "lung function".
My sympathies are totally with your mother. Even if the damn thing is sterile, to hell with it.
I'm glad to hear she is her old self. Tell her I adore her.
And though propably not sterile, I would love to kiss her on the mouth.
@Arnon & Carlos
I think it should be 'pulmonary function'.
Carlos
That's what I meant. Thanks!

Sometimes I have a weak spot for colloquial language.
‘I refuse’ is a powerful statement. I sympathize with your mother, nevertheless.
Arnon
I understand.
Probably wise, since you write fiction and not academic textbooks.
She doesn't look that old.

Are you are referring to the picture? I am guessing Arnon just took a picture of the internet to illustrate the lung test machine instead of posting a picture of his mother.
Lung function test sucks! And not because of the mouth piece.

Do you write academic textbooks? About Dutch writers? Can I buy them, can I loan them, can I read them?
About the colloquial language: this summer I took part in a language course. One day I bought a cd from a classical singer. I showed it to my teacher. According to her all the text were colloquial. A lot of what we heard on the street or from friends living in that country, seemed to be colloquial too. I started to wonder why I learned the standard language, instead of colloquial.
Colloquial
I'm so jealous of people who speak colloquial "Amsterdams". I only hear "Westvloams", that's the standard. When I tell them that I consider "Nederlands" to be my deepest identity , they consider me a traitor, meantime I am still longing for my dutch pasport. Silly me.

Consider converting to Judaism also.
There is a nasty competitive element in these pulmonary tests.
