Love life
Jew boy
During the opening party of the Istanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival a Dutch lady who works as a literary agent hugged me and asked me: “Do the Turks like Jew boys like you?”
I thought that I had misunderstood her, so I said: “Excuse me?”
She repeated the question.
Everybody is entitled to ask flippant questions, especially at opening parties of literary festivals, but somehow I felt that this question was a tad inappropriate.
For that reason I answered: “How is your love life?”

So?
What did she answer?
You made a great point. I think we are two of the few who act like we do. Let's share a table.
I would object to the word 'boy', if I were you.
Sometimes an ego takes away all moral.
Jee, how wrong. Was she drunk?
And with this entree, I instantly don't feel so bad anymore about what I said to you a while ago in Arnhem. I hope you forgave me.
Hille
No she wasn't drunk.
What did you whisper in my ear in Arnhem?
Arnon
I wouldn't dare to whisper in your ear as I am a little bit afraid of you. I probably spoke softly and I said something kind yet completely unintelligent like 'are you having a nice evening?' and 'I don't have a book of you to sign, but I can give you my library card' and 'doei'. I wanted to disappear in some hole. Anyway, the thing I'd whisper in your ear if I knew you better should probably stay inside my head.
@Hille
A while ago I thought you were a boy too (or a young man, if you like). I am not very good at distinguishing sexes, I am afraid. Forgive me.
Hille
Arnon is a rather amiable man, and what's more important a forgiving one. Don't be shy, not to him.
It can inspire him to a nice line in his next column or novel.
@Bernhard f
How can you tell Hille is not a boy?
That's ok Bernard. Hille is a boys name from Friesland. I may not have made it very obvious. But yes, as female as the average man can stand. And not from Friesland.
Hille
Sometimes amiable, sometimes a raging dog.
@mieke
You're slightly pathetic
H.S.
Just slightly?
Boasting and grotesque, that's my aim.
@H an
I remember a comment a time ago wherein Hille, to my slight amazement, said she was a woman.
@Mieke
That's the spirit, keep it up!
And I quite agree: along with someone like W.F. Hermans [Freddy de Vree: 'De aardigste man ter wereld' (2002) (biography of WFH), Arnon Grunberg belongs to the most aimiable persons on this planet.
But of course we are rather biased, being devoted followers of his literary works...
Anyway, how is your love-life?
A question I was asked by some lady a long time ago.
She happened to be a fellow student of mine.
It seems that some women think this is just 'small talk'.
It's a remarkable question, that's for sure.
So Arnon did indeed find the appropiate answer to this Jew-boy question. I think it's the perfect repartee....
