Grudge match
After the launch of my new novel in the Netherlands I invited a group of friends to play Ping-Pong.
A competition was set up for the participants.
My English translator, Sam, beat me.
This afternoon we had our grudge match.
We went to SPiN, first we drank some booze, then we played table tennis, he beat me again (4-3) and after that we went to an Indian restaurant, Tamarind. Sam had lamb with apricots.
He said: “I love apricots.”

So it looks as if you're better in launching books then Ping-Pong balls.
Riddle
Dear Mr Grunberg
why did you choose to hide the ones you dedicate your latest novel to behind initials? Is it because the list was otherwise too long, or does it have a personal reason?
It evokes the puzzle-solver in me, I think it will in others too. Is it food for Grunbergologists?
I thought of Marianne, Mayu, Mariette and Mama. Am I on the right track?
So far I am enjoying your novel very much. I think it will enter my personal top 3, alongside Phantom Pain and the Asylumseeker.
Hordijk
It's almost like a mathematical comparison: R+M 5 gives you the economical bubble.
I think we shouldn't forget Marieke.
@ Tom
I hope Arnon appreciated " le petit vin de campagne" ,I gave him for his new novel.
@ M.Hordijk
Let's not forget your name starts with an 'M' too.
M(mmmm)
There's only one Mieke though.
Apricots
I love them too
Mieke
Or R + M5 gives you the emotional bubble?
@M. Hordijk
Just finished "Huid en Haar".
I think a new Tirza bubble.
Bubble
A new Tirza-bubble.. Does this mean you think that Tirza is/was overrated? And that the same will happen with Huid en Haar? I haven't finished the latter yet (damn my job and other things that get in the way of reading, damn them all to hell), but so far I like Huid en Haar better: I think it's sharper written, the characters intruige me more and I think it's funnier.
But I must admit I was somewhat puzzled by Tirza's overwhelming succes, I think it's a good novel, but not Grunberg's masterpiece a lot of people claim it to be.
M. Hordijk
Though Tirza wasn't my favorite either, I still think the success was deserved. Bubble wasn't the right way of expressing it. But his latest is, for me , even better, if not his best. So I hope it will equal the success of Tirza.
@ Arnon
Thank you, thank you very much.
Why another novel with "Hair" in its title? What's so important about hair? I don't see the fuzz.
I've always found pingpong to be insanely therapeutic... somehow the sheer concentration of trying to get the ball to land on your opponent's side, preferably with a certain amount of spin and speed, is so intense an effort that all else seems to pale in comparison... I have friends who think the same way... and I play with them,,, it's great.
