The flu
Some people think that you can learn how to become a novelist. Well I do think you can learn how to write, but I’m not sure if something like a course creative writing is your best option.
Anyhow a Dutch publisher (Querido) and a Dutch newspaper (Trouw) are organizing a master class creative writing.
I was asked to speak for two hours to the students, but since I’m convinced that that was going to be a waste of time I took them to a sport school for a decent boxing training.
The trainer was a marvelous man named Henk.
Unfortunately shortly after the event I got the flu.

De beste optie voor een potentieel schrijver, naast het volgen van een masterclass, is natuurlijk de bezielende aanwezigheid van een gigant als Arnon. Het was dan ook een inspirerende ochtend, daar in die sportschool. Volgende keer als je zo'n gastoptreden verzorgt, wel even meedoen, he Arnon.

If Querido asks you to speak and you think it is a waste of your time, why even bather to waste anybody's time?I found little pleasure in, and was not very inspired by meeting this "marvallous"man named Henk.

Ben benieuwd wat er van onze toch wat sadistische vriend Henk overblijft nadat zestien schrijvers klaar met hem zijn. Zeker honderd pijnlijke spieren in mijn bovenlijf kunnen namelijk amper wachten om hem in mootjes te schrijven. Of heeft het karma ook hem getroffen met griep?Punching Henk in the face five times was inspiring, as was getting punched in the face by Henk.

Miriam, what do you mean with this: Henk was too gentle?I mean he hit me but not for real. No pain involved. Now I have to think really hard to get the moment back for my story. Maybe, if he would have been less gentle, I would write faster.

Hey Henk,Ik hoop dat je die schrijvers net zo hard hebt laten zwoegen als dat je ons altijd laat zwoegen. En dat ze net zo veel spierpijn hadden na de les als ik na mijn eerste les. En voor alle potentiële schrijvers die de les gevolgd hebben hoop ik dat ze genoeg inspiratie uit die pijn hebben kunnen halen om een goede tekst op papier te zetten.

Hi,I take lot of fun by reading your blog and also the great info. I am in the midst of my mid life crisis and has been thinking about writing. I did a few lines months ago and I think I better get back to it and write a few more lines, do the clear folder thnigy and sort out my characters!
