Foreman

Frigid

Last night in Amsterdam at the dinner for the "Libris Award" the Dutch minister of culture, Mr. Plasterk, approached me.
He did like my novel Tirza and compared the plot to an Agatha Christie novel, but he thought that my novel The Asylum Seeker was a little frigid.
I smiled.
Mr. Plasterk seemed to me an extremely likable man and I know that my talent for keeping conversations going is limited.
In 2004 Mr. Plasterk was foreman of the jury of the Libris Award.
I have never been foreman in my life, and if it’s ever going to happen I will be foreman of a group of miners.

There is at least (maybe at most) one good thing about the current cabinet, if you ask me, and that is Mr. Plasterk as minister of education, culture and science.

The previous one struck me as a total disaster. How can someone who doesn't know the difference between just a theory and a scientific theory be a minister of science?

Still, I'm afraid that Plasterk is only one of the few in this cabinet who know that "combining science and belief" is a gross contradiction.

If you didn't know already: I'm talking about ID vs. evolution theory. I'm ashamed to admit: one of those things I get angry about against my own will.

PS. congratulations on the Libris price!

Dear Arnon, South China Morning Post, the English newspaper based in Hong Kong, will publish a feature on you and your books. We need to run a picture of you to go with the story. Is it possible to get a hi-resolution picture from you? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much. Simon Song (assistant photo editor)

Dear Simon,
Please contact my assistant Johannes at johannes@arnongrunberg.com.
Kind regards,

Plasterk is a charming nice looking man with brains. So far for Plasterk.
I liked The Asylum Seeker out of sheer recognition (same for all the books I like: an enlightenment by a more talented soul; a companionship).
Arnon, congratulations with winning the Libris Prize. Enjoy your stay in Berlin.

Kind regards,

Hallo Arnon,

gefeliciteerd met de libris prijs. Wederom een geweldig boek.

I hope you are aware of the fact that science as we have known for so far in this western civilization and christianity in the approach of this cabinet is not the only way of combining religion and science. To me they are one as we are, once were or will become.

Still, i haven't found neither a religion nor a science which serves me well.

Arnon,
Congrats.

Knowing that Derrida only read four books of the thousands he owned makes me feel more comfortable.
But today, i started my new life, just like Remco Campert did in one of his short stories in Eetlezen (something which to me seems rather impossible, to read and eat. Though many people love it. Do you?)
I would like to take a book tonight. It is hard for me to take time for reading.
But my challenge at the moment is doing things which i considered as not meant for me or rather impossible. I started running as well and it leaves me with this remarkable good feeling.
I don't think it will be that hard to take the time again.
I take time for running writing making photographs, art... i should go and read again -for god's sake- . Maybe even read and eat.
Wonders will never cease.
Dear Hanne V,

If you're talking about religion from an anthropological viewpoint, I totally agree.

And if you're looking for something to serve you well, don't look at science. Go with religion.
