Incident

Pantsyr S1E

You might have heard that according to Syria Israeli jets penetrated Syrian airspace a couple of days ago.
The reason why this might have happened is not completely clear yet.
According to Debka it was a maneuver to test the capacity of Russian Pantsyr-S1E missiles. Both Iran and Syria purchased these missiles.
Debka writes: “Western intelligence circles maintain that it is vital for the US and Israel to establish the location and gauge the effectiveness of Pantsyr-S1E air defenses in Syrian and Iranian hands, as well as discovering how many each received. (…)
The purported Israeli air force flights over the Pantsyr-S1E site established that the new Russian missiles, activated for the first time in the Middle East, are effective and dangerous but can be disarmed. Western military sources attribute to those Israeli or other air force planes superior electronics for jamming the Russian missile systems, but stress nonetheless that they were extremely lucky to get away unharmed, or at worst, with damage minor enough for a safe return to base.”

Who knows, we will have a minor war with Iran before the next presidential election in the US.

I honour the views of Martin van Creveld on the matter, but does Bush?

(It takes more than an impressive new weapon system to wage and win a war.)

Funny you mention Martin van Creveld. I admire him as well, when I’ll be going to Israel in November for a series of articles for NRC about the IDF I plan to speak with Mr. van Creveld as well. DV of course.
Arnon
Are you familiar with Noam Chomsky's political writings?
van Creveld
Jan Thys, Arnon. You have raised my curiosity. Could you provide links to a couple of van Creveld articles worth reading?
@Oscar Wilde
When you google you will find a lot of articles, for example:

This is interesting because it mention Moshe Dayan. The latter wrote a very interesting story about his visit to USA and Vietnam – astounding:

@Arnon
I am looking forward to read your articles about your meeting with van Creveld. I hope you can publish it in the Belgian press too (De standaard, De Morgen or Humo?)

I’m familiar with some of Chomsky’s political writings. Why?
Arnon
I find Chomsky's political writings refreshing.
Oscar W
After watching CNN Chomsky is probably refreshing but after reading Coetzee Chomsky is probably going to be a little bit uneventful I'm afraid.
Arnon
"Manufacturing consent" is hardly an uneventful read, but I'm certainly willing to give Coetzee a try. Where should I start?
about Chomsky
Osama bin Laden in his latest video praises Chomsky for his complete oeuvre. That's making me really curious.
@Mieke
Yes in the sixties, seventies, Noam Chomski was quite popular. To enter university I did a dissertation about Michael Bakunin, one of his influences.
