Sinking ship

Pleasant surprise

Early this summer I received the German translation of my last novel (Tirza). But the work as chambermaid didn’t combine well with reading my own novel in German. Finally I started reading it and I must say in all modesty, it’s a pleasant surprise. Thanks of course also to Mr. Kersten, the translator. Halfway trough my own novel I decided to see Mr. Haggis latest movie.
I happened to like “Crash” – I wrote about it for a Dutch newspaper, and was extremely surprised that the movie won the Oscar for best movie. (I’m not a reliable fortuneteller.)
Mr. Haggis’ last movie “In the Valley of Elah” is even better than “Crash.” I found it an educating experience for my trip to the green zone in Baghdad next spring.
The acting is superb, and the ending made me ironically enough feel American – whatever that means, in this case it meant clearly: holding on to or not holding on to your sanity on a sinking ship.

20 september extra voorstelling 'De Asielzoeker'
Beste lezers,

Hartelijke groeten,

De NNP-Toneelcommissie

NNP (...) organised an excellent play based on The Asylum Seeker, directed by Martijn Kager. A very intelligent script combined with outstanding leading roles of Christian Beck (Coen van Beelen), the Bird and not to forget the asylum seeker himself.
This was theatre at its best, I was thrilled.(...) - Johannes van der Sluis (assistent van Arnon Grunberg) op arnongrunberg.com
I think there shouldn't be room for advertisements on this site. But nevertheless I wish you good shows.

I liked Crash as well, but my guess is that I won't like 'In the Valley of Ellah'.
I am alone in the centre of a grey and turbid nothing
[And] a dream full of horror has still not ceased to visit me, at sometimes frequent, sometimes longer, intervals. It is a dream within a dream, varied in detail, one in substance. I am sitting at a table with my family, or with friends, or at work, or in the green countryside; in short, in a peaceful relaxed environment, apparently without tension or affliction; yet I feel a deep and subtle anguish, the definite sensation of an impending threat. And in fact, as the dream proceeds, slowly and brutally, each time in a different way, everything collapses, and disintegrates around me, the scenery, the walls, the people, while the anguish becomes more intense and more precise. Now everything has changed into chaos; I am alone in the centre of a grey and turbid nothing, and now, I know what this thing means, and I also know that I have always known it; I am in the Lager once more, and nothing is true outside the Lager. All the rest was a brief pause, a deception of the senses, a dream; my family, nature in flower, my home. Now this inner dream, this dream of peace, is over, and in the outer dream, which continues, gelid, a well-known voice resounds: a single word, not imperious, but brief and subdued. It is the dawn command, of Auschwitz, a foreign word, feared and expected: get up, "Wstawàch." (Primo Levi - The Truce)
The face of horror when the ship has sunk.

Why do you think you would not like “In the valley of Ellah?”
Crash
Watching "Crash", I realized that it is possible to be harassed by a movie.
The valley of Ellah
Why I wouldn't, I think: because your opinion (which's quite convincing) is biased by your future trip. I don't have that future, so I don't have that view. If I don't have that view, this movie would just be a movie about a warzone (I think), and that's what I don't like. But 'Full Metal Jacket' is a warmovie as well, and I did like that one (when I watched it, years and years after its release). The ending might be quite interesting, but as I didn't like the obviousness of 'American Idiot' by Greenday, I might not like this ending as well..
Dens
Excuse me Elah is with one"l".
Oscar W
What do you mean with being harassed by “Crash” exactly?
Dens
It’s not a war zone movie at all and I’m not biased because my future trips to Iraq. This is a ridiculous prejudice.
Please read Mr. Denby’s review in the New Yorker;

By the way having seen one movie about war doesn’t mean you have seen them all. Please. Are you still in Turkey, my friend?
Sinking Ship and the valley of Elah
I think the valley of Elah will be very worthwhile to watch.
I don't understand one iota of mr. Dens's argument why HE will not like the movie. Does anyone ?
the Valley of Elah
Arnon,
why -do you think- is the article from the New Yorker dated in the future ? I know it's not the date of release, because it has already been released September 14th....
What will happen on Monday September 24 th?
Arnon
I remember that throughout watching "Crash", I became increasingly aware of the fact that I was wearing socks. I have come to recognize that an increased awareness of sensations in my feet is usually associated with my taking part in something that I don't want to take part in. Politeness is one of my vices, and because I saw "Crash" with friends--who all seemed to like the movie--I did not dare leave the theater.
I'm sorry I'm that prejudiced. I remember I saw 'Jarhead' with a friend who'd read some magnificient reviews about that movie. It was, without doubt, the most boring and wasteful movie I've ever seen. This review sounded good, even though I had to tell myself not to be prejudiced about Tommy Lee Jones, from whom I'm not a big fan.

I'm also sorry I wrote Elah with double l.
And yes, I'm still in Turkey. Thursday at 23.20 I should be arriving at Zaventem's airport. I've got some 1" and 2nd degree burns on my face and upper body thanks to a 'goodbye sketch' my fellow entertainers did, if someone is still willing to believe me.
Oscar W
I’m really sorry but I don’t get this: the fact that you wearing socks and the movie “Crash.” FYI when I don’t wear flip-flops or sandals I wear socks. I’m the proud owner of at least sixty pair of socks, of beautiful socks. Has Laura’s any objections to men wearing socks?
And she might not be into Shakespeare but she was recently quoting Shakespeare. Hopefully I will witness the day that se will quote me.
Furthermore I understand that Laura has two grandmothers: one who is able to see, living in the Bronx, and another grandmother, blind, her whereabouts are not yet known to me.
I need to see both grandmothers before I can move closer to Laura. I don’t ask for a credit check, it’s not important for me if Laura has been a convicted felon, I can live with that, (I like to know the details of the felony but not right away) but I need to see her grandmothers.
Dens
I wrote Elah with two l’s – that confused you. I apologize for the confusion.
The movie has nothing to do whatsoever with Jarhead. Stop comparing apples and pears.
I once played poker with the author of “Jarhead.” A friendly guy, a little bit on the stingy side while playing poker but I don’t expect you to be a generous poker player.
I'm different when I play poker. Really, it might be the only moment I'm not who I think to be. I love poker though, but I love myself as well.
Arnon
It was my becoming aware of the presence of my socks, triggered by feeling my socks on my feet, that was caused by watching the movie "Crash". This feeling was decidedly unpleasant.

Laura loves socks. She is known for unintentionally wearing socks that don't match. I very rarely do not wear socks. I like to wear socks with my sandals, although this was disapproved of by Laura for being "too European".

We are now aligned regarding Laura's grandmothers. Although, to make things a little more confusing, both grandmothers live in the Bronx.
Oscar W
There are not many Jews left in the Bronk. Laura’s grandmothers must be tough women. Wearing socks in sandals is not so much European -- it’s just not very esthetic.
Is Laura sometimes confused about her socks or is she confused in general? Is this how the two of you met? You staring at her socks and mumbling, “excuse me, your socks don’t match” and she responding with a Shakespeare quote?
Arnon
I would say that generally speaking, Laura is not confused. Although at times, she is definitely puzzled. When Laura and I first met, we were both wearing socks.
