Merkel tolerated Mr. Seehofer's clown act in order to save het government. It's unlikely that the Social Democrats will bring down the government, even though they may despise the agreement between CDU and CSU, a highly symbolic to not say empty agreement, which is above all meant to appease AfD and its voters.

But most people in CDU and CSU realize that a split in the party will mean the end of the Christen Democratic monopoly on power in postwar Germany, Die Zeit suggested that the end of the AfD will be near when CSU is going to operate nationwide in Germany.
I don't think so. The end of the liberal order in Germany may be nearer than the end of the AfD, and I'm not in favor of Apocalyptic fantasies.
