Market

House & Home

A couple of days ago I read a review by Michiko Kakutani that made me almost buy the book, not something that happens on a regular basis. The book in question was “Love and Consequences” by Margaret B. Jones. According to the review the book was a memoir written by a young woman about her life in a gang in LA. Maybe it was voyeurism that got the better of me, or it was the lyricism of Kakutani, or maybe it was just because the title reminded me of an excellent Italian movie “Le conseguenze dell’amore” about which I wrote in 2005.
A couple of days later I read a profile about the author in the House & Home section of the Times, not a section I read avidly.
Today the Times reports on the front page that Margaret B. Jones does not exist, and her book is not a memoir but pure fiction.
Her publisher has recalled the books.
There all all kinds of psychological explanations thinkable to explain this fraud, but maybe at the end what really counted were economical reasons.
Had Ms. Jones be profiled for the House & Home section had she not been a former gang member? I doubt it.
The market for non-fiction is simply bigger than the market for fiction.
There is a huge appetite for what people perceive as authenticity.
A friend told me that she overheard a woman asking: "Is a novel non-fiction?"
We know by know that the answer can be yes.

So she collected tales of gang members and wove them together into a fictive life story and called it an autobiography? Only the latter is clearly a fraud. Can we call that book pure fiction if it is based upon true tales of gang members?
It is a platitude, but is there not a thin line between fiction and non-fiction? No reason to lie though.

On idealism
Not so long ago Arnon remarked upon the dangers that come with idealism. By some readers this was perceived as an oddity. (This makes clear that there are readers who are content with reading, and rather leave reasoning behind.) To those I would advise to spend thirty minutes of their time to watch ‘De Keien van de Wetstraat’ wherein Bruno Valkeniers is being interviewed.

Idealism
@Pjötr
Yes and there is now the sociologist Egbert Tellegen and his interesting book ‘Het utopisme van de drugsbestrijding’ also about the dangers of wild idealism:

He will provide you with my e-mail address.
Thanks!
In the same way, a photograph can be fiction. Even the ones in newspapers.

I know it isn't true but the thought came to me that fiction is non-fiction for the elite.

A baker sells bread for cakes. People seem to enjoy the 'cake' very much. That's what happens all the time.
Imagine people find an old indian tool or something with "Karl May was here" written on it.

Anyway, i can't understand how she could lie for years.
I once thought i had a friend. After years i found out that the life of which he told me was fiction untill every little detail.
He wasn't my friend. But a friend of a friend. It is true anyway..
Geachte heer Grunberg,

Eindelijk “Le conseguenze dell’amore” gezien.

You will find the essay in "The Comfort of Slapstick".
Beste Arnon,
