Closing time
Another tasting menu tonight?
Last night after having seen the movie “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” for the second time I went with a good friend of mine to Barolo, if for no other reason than to enjoy the garden.
To my surprise I was greeted by the sommelier of San Domenico.
Now San Domenico on Central Park South has a special place in my heart.
I was introduced to San Domenico by my former fiancée Elayne in 1999 and for a while I had the habit of taking women (and men) to San Domenico for the tasting menu.
Often the daughter of the owner would say: “Ah, Mr. Grunberg, another tasting menu tonight.”
The hint of irony didn’t escape me but it was a hint with which I could live very well.
The sommelier at San Domenico always reminded me of an actor in a Molière play.
Recently I stopped going to San Domenico on a regular basis. The need for tasting menu’s had faded away.
Last night the sommelier at Barolo told met hat San Domenico has closed.
This is another reason for melancholy, I’ll think of the tasting menus of San Domenico, and the women and men who tasted these menus -- and who have all but one or two disappeared from my life.

I'm unfortunately not a frequent visitor of restaurants, due to budgetery problems, but I'm curious to know what we are looking at on the picture. They seem to be some kind of brown leaves with a strange texture of white craqueler.
Bram
We are looking here at a special kind of ravioli, with egg yolk inside. Very tasty.
Arnon
It fits perfectly!
J-man will send you my mail.
Margot
Please send picture.
Arnon
J-man just left.
I don't have a digital camera.
It's all about your imagination, darling.
Arnon
Margot looked smashing in the dress.
It is colourful and perfect for the Autumn (because of the wool), but it has a summer feeling to it.
Arnon
If you want I can send you a picture.
Johannes
I know we don't share the same taste, but I really do love this dress!
@ Bram
The brown leaves are slices of truffle. Quite an expensive meal if you ask me.
Noa
Okay, I will.
Arnon
What did your friend think of Mr. Bardem? Did she fancy him? Or did she object to the high level of testosteron just as I do?
Arnon
I just noticed, one of your entries ( laughing) made up to onehundred comments, wich is at the same time the maximum. Is this the first time?
Mieke
My good friend liked Mr. Bardem better in No Country for Old Men, but she thought that he was pretty convincing as a player.
Mieke
I'm not sure about this, I mean the comments, you should ask Johannes or Sander.
Johannes
Is she going to make other women jealous?
Mieke
Maybe Sander knows it.
I can only remember that a post about marriage catapulted the comments.
People must be very interested in marriages and dresses.
The post 'Crackdown' from some days ago has one comment as you may know.
On this site the German Tirza has the most reviews (45). Some extra info for you.
Arnon: Did you only ever order the tasting menu at San Domenico?
Arnon
I am sure Margot has a good product to remove possible wine stains.
Teresa
Well, no sometimes I didn't order the tasting menu.
Why?
Arnon
Nothing really, I was just wondering whether that menu was some kind of personality test.
Teresa
Personaiity test? Who do you think I am? A weirdo? A nerd? I prefer people who enjoy eating but I don't need a tasting menu for that.
Arnon
I don't think you are weird or nerdy.
Sander
Did you consider it unlikely that one entry would make up to a hundred reactions when you designed this blog? Extra comments in 'Laughing' are impossible.

My reply:
She's already making me a little bit jealous because of the dress.
Mieke
Sander is on holiday. I'll discuss this with him later.
Melancholy
I stopped reading The Plague by Camus, I do not knew why. But, now that my mother died, I can continue, the book really appeals to my mood. He writes wonderful about melancholy.
@monica
Monica, if you are the student of Arnon's blog you appear to be, you should probably not feel too badly about the dress. History seems to show that if you are given a dress or a tasting menu by Arnon, the odds of your friendship lasting are vastly reduced, not to mention the odds of the restaurant or dress shop surviving.
