The movie “The Wrestler” is a portrait of the wrestler as a slightly older man. On Sunday night the audience in Lincoln Plaza Cinemas didn’t seem to be totally convinced by “The Wrestler” but I was happy to have indulged in the world of wrestling on a cold Sunday night.
After forty minutes I was afraid that the movie would descend into sentimental territory – a wrestler, a daughter and a stripper, God cannot be far away – but thank God there is not much redemption to be found in this story.
My favorite scenes took place in the meat department of a supermarket where the wrestler (Mickey Rourke) finds a daytime job after a heart attack prevents him from continuing his wrestling career.
He could have become employee of the month, so much is clear, he knows how to put a smile on the faces of his clients, but at the end self-destruction is a matter of pride.

Just like destruction in the whole always seems to be (a matter of pride)
Can one call religion a form of pride?
I highly recommend the documentary "Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows", a drama of Shakespearean proportions.
Pride
This is my motto.
"selfdestruction is a matter of pride" and I am great doing so.

You should consider investing in a career of a Puritan pastor rather than that of a Jewish Messaiah.
Pride in its Place
I don't understand. When the rich, snooty team is beating us during halftime of the state championships it is our pride in ourselves and whatever we are that will inspire us to overcome at the final buzzer but if we're on the cusp of victory ourselves it is pride that will bring us down? Make up your mind, Hollywood, an anxious world awaits your guidance.
In the meantime are there any examples from the Ancients of pride not leading to a fall?
Hylobates
Would you say that hubris and pride are the same thing?
Oscar
Have you ever been to a wrestling match?
Neria
I always thought as Arnon being Awromele, but I can assure you that I would make a great Jewish Messiah. Believe me and you will be healed.

Thanks! Did you have a chance to watch the film?
Arnon
Attending a wrestling match is one of my secret desires.
Arnon
No irony intended.
Oscar
I'm a wrestling-virgin as well. Perhaps we could go together?
Arnon
That's a delightful idea.
Oscar
Arnon isn't a complete wrestling virgin. He mudwrestled with me. If you want I can send you a DVD of the event.
Mieke
Are you suggesting that you've deflowered me?
Naughty girl.

Let's make it a resolution for 2009.
Mieke
It's the second laughter you draw from me already. Soon I'll feel in debt :)
Mieke
Was this a public event?
Oscar
'The female mudwrestling for peace' in November last year. It was very public, alas no crowd.

A matter of pride... OK... but AT the end of the movie or IN the end, in general, makes a big difference. Enlighten me, please. By the way, just finished the Jewish Messiah, am reading Tirzah. Dare not write another sentence of my own anymore. What a pity, was working on the great Dutch novel.
@Oscar
Alas, not yet but soon.
@Mieke
I saw you wrestling on DVD! You counted on sheer strength and power, but Arnon won by skill, I am afraid.
Arnon
It's a deal.

I think I saw Mayu's mother M. in an Antwerp restaurant. Because I realised it so late, I nodded quite late, she didn't nod back. At this point I wasn't sure if it was M. or not. Could you confirm that M. was at this restaurant, Mr. Arnon? It's a 15th century cellar.

At the end of the movie, at the end of his ("The Ram") career, at the end of the day, self-destruction is a matter of pride.
In the end, selfdestruction can be a matter of bad luck as well.

As far as I know Mayu's mother is in Hilversum. Tomorrow she will be travelling to France.
Oscar
Spring or summer 09?
Arnon
Either spring or summer 2009 would work for me.
Mieke
Thanks! In return I will send you a copy of the documentary "Wrestling with shadows". Johannes, would you be able to mediate this exchange of gifts?
