Nightclub
The proper route
Last night I explored Baghdad’s nightlife. At a nightclub on Abu Nawas Street I befriended a sheikh from Anbar province. He invited me to come to visit him soon.
The nightclub itself is hardly a nightclub to western standards, but there is booze and loud (Iraqi) music. According to my guide waitresses are available as prostitutes, but you cannot take them home right away. The proper route is to ask the waitress for her phone number and to give her a shout the next day.

Arnon
Is it necessary to marry the prostitute?
Batta
No
Bernard
See also my book "Chambermaids and Soldiers" -- the chapter on Lebanon.
arnon
is the lady obliged to give you her number, on not?
@Arnon
Thanks. I will.
Andrea
Good question. I don't think so.
arnon
so what is it that makes them prostitutes?
Andrea
I don't know what you know about this profession, but even a prostitute can refuse a customer. (Before I open a can of worms I know some of them cannot.)
Arnon
And do you actually have to call her on that number, or is it just a way of shoiwing interest?
so fine to hear you make the arguement you have the feeling consent is necessary . that IS what you are saying now right? why else would they do the 'phone thingy' , thats what its for, so she can make clear to you she 's ok with it. and as long as its clear she's willing , to ,well whatever ...(let's not go into details on this, cos THAT's not so important )...
and as long as it's crystal clear what they agreed up on - or am i stretching it a little, now ?- who knows, mayeb not even, maybe that's what you are supposed to discuss over on the phone ?
Batta
Showing interest in someone who appears to be a prostitute is showing interest in the transaction I guess.
Arnon
Does a prostitute kiss on the mouth?
I don't see any women in the picture. Are those men's women veiled and safely at home?
arnon
well, I am not that familiar with this job.
But when I was a child, it was my biggest wish to become a prostitute.
Or, if possiblle, a drug addicted prostitute living in Hollywood.
Mieke
Ask the men.
andrea
At what age exactly did you decide to not fulfill your wish?
Arnon
I hoped you had asked that question. Too bad.
arnon
I guess i was 12 or something. I have realised that sadness is not that enriching as I belived it would be.
Andrea
There's a book called "The Happy Hooker" -- maybe you've heard of it.
arnon
I wanted to be a sad one.
(no idea why)
Andrea
I see.
Andrea
Maybe you wanted to be a sad hooker so someone would come around and save you out of your sad hookerlife?
annojo
not really.
I thought if I would be alone enought in a shit situation, it would give me some kind of independence on everything.
at least I think that was in my head.
but most likely I have just seen some porn and I have found it impressing.
Andrea
So actually, you wanted to become an object. Needing no one, being no one. IIt sounds familiar, I wanted to become a hallstand when I was about five years old.
annjo
nope...
andrea
If I may ask, what have you become?
annojo
a writer.
andrea,
Sounds like a good alternative for a hooker.
annojo
or maybe the only possible alternative.
Andrea,
Have you become a sad writer? Just as once you wanted to become a sad prostitute?
annojo
no, I am really joyfull.
I was stupid then.
Andrea
What kind of writer?
david
what kind?
I dont really get this question, can you be more specific, please?
Andrea
Sorry, what sort of writer are you? (journalist, novelist, poet, tax )
david
a novelist with specialisation on toilete scenes.
Andrea
Sounds very intersting, no hygienic problems?
david
I am not aware. its nice you care, though.
Andrea
I don't, you just remind me off a german writer.
david
how could I?
by doing what?
Andrea
By specializing in toilets.
Andrea..

make-up
