Essence

Lublin

Last winter I was writer-in-residence in the Polish city of Lublin. My task was not very complicated, I was supposed to write a story in which Lublin in one way or the other played a role.
That’s what I did. (You can read the story “A reported Offence” here.)
Tonight I had a discussion in Brussels with a Flemish journalist about my experiences in Lublin.
Before the interview I decided to take a shower. It took about ten minutes before the water got warm. But then there was no time anymore to take a shower.
The Flemish journalist asked me: “Why are you so curious?” “It’s the essence of pleasure, curiosity is the essence of writing as well. I’m curious to see your bathroom for example.” Later she told me that I could see her bathroom.
“Next time,” I said.
Apparently, my curiosity is not limitless.
