Ungrateful

On Ukrainization – Melman in Haaretz:

‘Five months – 157 days, to be exact – since the war in Gaza began, there's no escaping the realization that Israel is undergoing a process of Ukrainization. It, too, could be part of a lengthy war (Ukraine has already hit two years) with no end in sight and without the sides being capable of reaching a compromise agreement to end it.’

(…)

‘Despite all the differences, all the parties – Ukraine, Hamas, Russia, and Israel – tend to say they're the victims, be self-righteous, and believe that they're entirely justified in their actions and that justice should be obtained at all costs. And there's another similarity: although Ukraine and Israel benefit from massive military and diplomatic assistance from the U.S., without it's unlikely they could continue the wars, they are dissatisfied, complain, and outright ungrateful.’

‘Hamas has, in fact, sustained severe blows, and most of its rocket arsenal and military capabilities have been destroyed. But even if half of its ranks, or 60 to 70 percent, have been eliminated, Hamas continues to demonstrate resilience and determination.
The week before last saw an increase in the drizzle of rockets launched from Gaza at several Gaza border communities, including Sderot and Ashkelon – and even further to Hatzerim, near Be'er Sheva. These are sporadic launches whose goal is to demonstrate that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are alive and kicking rather than causing loss of life or property.’

‘he situation isn't encouraging on the Lebanese border, either. According to figures from the military, since October 7, 14 soldiers and seven civilians have been killed in the north, and several dozen have been wounded; on the Lebanese side, over 260 have been killed and over 600 wounded. Most of them were Hezbollah members, but several Lebanese civilians have also been killed.
Hezbollah has launched 2,700 rockets and drones at an average rate of 15 rockets a day. Twenty-five rockets have been fired from Syria. The IDF has fired 13,000 artillery shells, bombs, and missiles, attacking over 4,000 Hezbollah targets.’

‘In addition to their disgraceful failures before the war and on October 7, Military Intelligence and the IDF in general are finding it hard to get information about the fate of the hostages and mount rescue operations. And so, in what has already become a terrible cliché, the danger to their lives increases every day. The estimate – recently voiced by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak – is that of the 134 hostages (31 of them bodies) still in Gaza, including 10 foreigners, it's unlikely that even half are alive.’

‘But above all, the military is trapped in Gaza because of an absence of clear instructions from the political leadership about a plan and strategy for ending the war. It's already clear that out of personal and political considerations, Netanyahu isn't sprinting to end the fighting in Gaza. Therefore, he is refusing to prepare an exit strategy from Gaza and an end to the war. Israel has never excelled at consolidating long-term strategies and has always tended to fall in love with incidental tactics.’

(…)

‘ Even if the Shin Bet security service and Military Intelligence succeed in tracking down Sinwar in Gaza's tunnels (and he may actually hiding in the Egyptian side of Rafah, which is likely to be out of bounds for Israel), Hamas won't disappear, either as a movement with popular support in Gaza, the West Bank, and the Palestinian Diaspora, or as an ideology.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening by the day. The IDF, and even the security cabinet, now understand, after weeks of repression and denial, that this is a serious crisis. About 30,000 people – some 40 percent of them children – have been killed by IDF fire during the war, 1.5 percent of Gaza's population.’

‘Netanyahu's behavior is transparent. Nobody is impressed by his lies and about-faces. The national lottery once had a slogan stating, "I fill out [the lottery] every week, so I'm also a partner." This could be applied to Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, too. As long as you're part of the government, you're also partners to the diplomatic, military, economic, and psychological disaster that is weakening Israel domestically and abroad and threatening to internationally isolate it and turn it into a pariah state.’

It should have been clear on October 7, 2023, to anybody who was in the habit of reading newspapers and who had just an average intelligence that Hamas was not going to disappear.
Not as an ideology nor as a movement.

Within a couple of days, or at least within four weeks, it became clear that the damage Israel was doing to itself was much more severe than anything that Hamas did and could have done.

The lack of leadership, the intellectual and moral corruption, are not exceptional. All these things can be found in many other countries.

But the combination of religious fanatism i.e. political Messianism, corrupted leadership and war is making the blows more fatal.
By turning itself into a pariah state – and of course things can change quickly, look at Saudi Arabia but still – Israel succumbed to the temptation of Messianic paranoia.
