In the summer of 2006 and in the winter of 2008 I visited Lori Berenson in her prison in Cajamarca, Peru.
I wrote about these visits in the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad. The articles have been later published in my collection of journalistic pieces “Chambermaids and Soldiers”.

Lori Berenson has been accused of aiding the Peruvian guerilla movement MRTA.
Tonight, a friend alerted me to the news that Lori Berenson, who has a one-year-old son, has been freed on parole.
I enjoyed my conversations with Lori Berenson tremendously, but above all I have a weak spot for her father.
When I traveled with him to Peru in the summer of 2006 he told me that he wanted to live to see Lori free.
