On the drones and the hostages – Amos Harel in Haaretz:

‘U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his assurance that Israel and Hamas were close to a new hostage deal on Friday night.
"We'll let you know about it during the day or maybe tomorrow, and we have a chance of that," he said. He also expressed his belief that an American-Iranian deal on the curbing of Iran's nuclear program was also expected soon.
No update was given by Saturday evening, but one may be given soon.
The president, as is his wont, did not go into details. More than anything, it seems that this is a narcissist who needs constant media attention. The desperate expectations for good news about an end to the war in Gaza by many in Israel and on the Palestinian side interest him less.
Communication between the U.S. and Israel is no longer conducted through the Israeli negotiating team and hardly involves the mediators, Egypt and Qatar. Trump and his emissaries talk directly to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and his envoys are in direct contact with Hamas' leaders outside the Gaza Strip, who are in Doha, the capital of Qatar.’

‘The question is whether Hamas can be persuaded that the U.S. president will keep his word and force Netanyahu to end the war, with a withdrawal of the IDF from the enclave in exchange for the return of all the hostages and bodies.’

(…)

‘While Netanyahu and his ministers continue to pay lip service to the need to release the hostages, while in fact thwarting attempts to achieve this, the public sentiment in Israel is completely different.
This is attested to by all opinion polls, which point to sweeping support for a deal that includes the return of all the hostages in exchange for an end to the war.’

‘The tough stance toward soldiers who can no longer cope, along with severe manpower shortages in combat units, is a symptom of a much broader problem.
It appears that Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir will soon have no choice but to take harsher symbolic measures and issue draft notices to tens of thousands of Haredi men who are avoiding service due to the political power of their representatives in the Knesset and government.’

‘According to the article, the revolution generated by drones on the battlefield "significantly alters ground combat, as well as other combat dimensions. This is not just another tool or widespread technological gadget, but a true revolution which impacts combat techniques, the way forces organize and the tactical control of battles…the offensive drone, ostensibly a simple tool, forces military thinking to update and abandon past concepts that were relevant to the Cold War era or to anti-terror operations, concepts which do not provide answers in current combat zones."
The writers analyze the use of drones in the war in Ukraine and determine that "the armies of Russia and Ukraine have been in battle for over two years and have to learn, for lack of choice, how to adapt and change. To a great extent, what they've already managed to forget, most armies in the world have not begun to learn.’

(…)

‘What needs to happen now is a systemic leap: no more experiments or isolated units, but the establishment of a designated drone corps that includes the development of combat tools, a training apparatus, simulators and mass production.’

First the drones, then the bomb, the hostages are an afterthought, the people in Gaza not even afterthought.

And the Russian-Ukrainian war is for most countries a training ground.
