Tonight I saw the play “Festen”, based on the movie by Thomas Vinterberg, in St. Ann’s Warehouse.
My friend Redbad Klynstra, whom I met when I was 15, plays a small part in this production.
In his review in the Times Ben Brantley evoked Shakespeare, but I was reminded of a Greek tragedy: incest and suicide.
Only the punishment was rather absent.
To summarize this play that is worth seeing: crime without punishment.
But sometimes the biggest drama is the absence of drama.
