For a while I thought that Steve Soderbergh’s new movie “Side Effects” is about the pharmaceutical industry. But it is not, or at least it’s not so much about the pharmaceutical industry as it is about the psychiatric industry.

As A.O Scott wrote in The Times: ‘Mr. Law’s transformation is especially impressive, as the good doctor travels a circuit from compassion to confusion to coldblooded fury and discovers that paranoia is less a psychic disorder than a realistic response to circumstances.’

It’s the circumstances that decide who’s mentally ill and who’s healthy, it’s culture and its values that decide what’s a realistic response to circumstances and what isn’t.

Feeling better is just another moral imperative.
