Judy Maltz in Haaretz: ‘It is often argued that the resurgence of antisemitism in Europe in recent decades is linked to Israel, and indeed, experience shows that every new round of fighting in the Middle East tends to trigger anti-Jewish incidents outside the region. The return of the oldest hatred in the world is often traced back to the early 1990s, during the first Palestinian intifada against Israel.’
According to the historian Flora Cassen, ‘European countries acknowledging their complicity in the Final Solution, as reflected in the establishment of Holocaust memorials across the continent, national apologies and reparations programs’ triggered anti-Jewish sentiments.
And: ‘In that case, might Jews be better off today were the past forgotten? (…) Her answer is that if the goal is to create conditions for reconciliation – rather than resentment – perhaps things need to be done differently.’
The backlash of memory culture becomes more evident every day.
