In a special issue in Die Zeit about World War I read something about the diaries of Thea Sternheim, which I wasn’t aware of:

“Thea Sternheim ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt [1914] 30 Jahre alt. Seit gut einem Jahr lebt sie mit ihrer Familie im belgischen La Hulpe. Hinter ihr liegt bereits eine Ehe mit dem jüdischen Juristen Arthur Löwenstein, den sie 1901 als 17-Jährige heimlich geheiratet hat und den Vater ihrer ersten Tochter ist. Noch während sie mit Löwenstein verheiratet ist, beginnt sie eine leidenschaftliche Affäre mit Carl Sternheim und bekommt von ihm eine weitere Tochter. Als ihr Vater, ein reicher Schuhfabrikant, 1906 stirbt, hinterlässt er ein Millionenvermögen, das Thea und Carl ein großbürgerliches Leben ermöglicht. Sie pflegen Kontakte zu dem Theaterregisseur Max Reinhardt, dem Unternehmer und Schriftsteller Walter Rathenau, dem Dichter Ernst Stadler. (...)
Doch schon als 1908 der Sohn Klaus zur Welt kommt, zeigt die Beziehung Risse: Carl betrügt seine Frau.“

An attempt to translate this into English:

“At that time [1914] Thea is 30 years old. Since more than a year she has been living with her family in the Belgian town of La Hulpe. The marriage with the Jewish lawyer Arthuw Löwenstein, to whom she got married secretly at the age of 17 in 1901 and who is the father of her first daughter, is already behind her. Still being married to Löwenstein she gets involved in a passionate affair with Carl Sternheim who gives her a second daughter. When Thea’s father, the rich owner of a shoe factory, passes away in 1906, she inherits a fortune from him that allows Thea and Carl to live a bourgeois life. They are in contact with theater director Max Reinhardt, businessman and author Walter Rathenau, the poet Ernst Stadler. (…)
But already in 1908, when her first son Klaus is born, cracks appear in their marriage: Carl is unfaithful to his wife.”
