Today we went to a healthcare center that specializes in family planning, helping (female) victims of sexual and domestic violence and providing pregnant women with hiv- and syphilis tests, among other basic health services.
One of the nurses told me that it was fairly common here for men to beat up their wives. “That’s how a man shows that he is the boss,’ she said.
Also, according to this nurse polygamy is condoned here even among Christians. To some it may be comforting that you don’t have to be Muslim to have more wives, to others it might be a disappointment.
