Today

Months

I had tea with one of the caregivers of my mother in my mother's living room. She asked: “Is it April the 9th today?”
“Yes,” I said, “I believe so.”
“Then it is two months ago,” she said, “that your mother passed away. Two months, unbelievable, it feels like four months, five months.”
I nodded.
“Let’s light a candle,” she said.
She lit a candle.
Then she said: “Let’s light two candles.”
She lit another candle.
We sat there for five minutes or so.
“I have a dinner appointment, I have to go,” I said.
“I’ll stay here with the candles,” she said.
We hugged each other; then I left.
