Ross Douthat in NYT summarized the State of the Union and probably the G.O.P. strategy till November, maybe after that: "If you like this economy, you should like me, too."
Douthat added: "Politicians have won re-election with that sort of messaging. But few of them have had as far to climb to reach even basic likability as President Donald J. Trump."

Let's assume that before 2020 many people will start disliking the economy. If not, we must and can trust that the President will continue his outrageous behavior.
The President is a symptom, it's too convenient to believe that he is much more than that.
