Boredom

Dinner with a writer who is in her early eighties.
“Why do you fall out of love?” she asked me.
Before I could answer she said: “Boredom.”
A little bit later she said: ‘If you go to bed with somebody all bets are off.”
Over dessert she said: “If you are attacked as a Jew you defend yourself as a Jew.” (Paraphrasing Arendt)
She also wanted to know: “Are you a hunter?”
One of the better evenings in my life.
